**The International Growth Centre (IGC)**
**IGC Policy Economist (Cities)**
**Salary: from £37,197 to £44,802 per annum with the potential to progress to £48,168 per annum including London allowance**
The International Growth Centre works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. Cities that Work (CtW) is an IGC initiative that translates economic research and practical insight into clear urban policy guidance and support for policymakers. Over the past four years, CtW has undertaken significant impact-driven collaborations with several policymakers to support evidence-based urban policy reforms. The initiative is driven by the priorities of cities, and led by a Council of world-renowned researchers and policymakers - chaired by Ed Glaeser (Harvard) and includes Sir Paul Collier (Oxford), Jennifer Musisi (former head of the Kampala Capital City Authority), and Tony Venables (Manchester).
The IGC Policy Economist (Cities) will join a team supporting the development and implementation of the overall strategy for the _Cities that Work_ initiative, which includes curating and disseminating a stock of knowledge on key themes relating to cities and urbanisation, supporting the commissioning of research, and delivering effective programme management of the portfolio of IGC projects under this theme. Importantly, the post-holding will be involved in supporting and/or leading on responding to demands for evidence from policymakers on priority urban policy-areas. They will also be involved in contributing to the global debate on these topics, and promoting cross-city learning.
The successful applicants will have:
- a demonstrated understanding of policy-relevant economic research;
- the ability to construct clear and concise arguments to facilitate the translation of research into policy recommendations and excellent written and oral communication skills;
- the willingness to regularly travel to Africa, South Asia and Middle East, and engage with country teams and stakeholders in these regions;
- the ability to organise their own workload and work independently as a dynamic self-starter;
- thematic expertise and interest on the theme of cities and urbanisation, including urban land use planning and mobility, housing and informal settlement upgrading, and local revenue mobilisation.
