Job description.
- **Clinical Leadership**: Emergency Consultants provide clinical leadership within the Emergency Department (ED), overseeing the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with acute medical conditions, injuries, and emergencies.
- **Patient Care**: They are responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to patients, ensuring that treatment is prioritized based on the severity and acuity of their conditions.
- **Clinical Supervision**: Emergency Consultants supervise and support junior doctors, including Specialty Trainees, Foundation Doctors, and other medical staff, in the delivery of patient care within the ED. They provide guidance, mentorship, and clinical oversight to ensure safe and effective practice.
- **Multidisciplinary Collaboration**: They work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, paramedics, allied health professionals, and support staff, to coordinate patient care, facilitate timely interventions, and optimize outcomes for patients.
- **Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement**: Emergency Consultants contribute to clinical governance activities, including audits, reviews, and quality improvement initiatives, to monitor and enhance the quality and safety of emergency care services. They participate in clinical audits, mortality and morbidity reviews, and guideline development to promote best practices and adherence to standards.
- **Teaching and Training**: They play a key role in medical education and training, providing teaching sessions, lectures, and practical demonstrations to medical students, junior doctors, and other healthcare professionals. They facilitate clinical skills training, simulation exercises, and competency assessments to support the professional development of trainees.
- **Research and Innovation**: Emergency Consultants engage in research projects, academic collaborations, and clinical trials to contribute to the advancement of emergency medicine knowledge and practice. They explore innovative approaches to patient care, technology adoption, and service delivery to improve outcomes and efficiency in the ED.
- **Emergency Preparedness and Response**: They participate in emergency preparedness and response activities, including disaster planning, mass casualty management, and coordination with external agencies and organizations during major incidents or public health emergencies.
**Professional Development**: Emergency Consultants are committed to continuous professional development, staying abreast of latest developments, guidelines, and innovations in emergency medicine. They attend conferences, workshops, and professional meetings to expand their knowledge and skills and maintain professional registration and accreditation.
**Qualifications**
**Essential**
- Full GMC Registration and a licence to practise
- On Specialist Register via: CCT or CESR-CP (Combined Programme) (proposed CCT/CESR-CP date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights
**Clinical Experience**
**Essential**
- A full understanding of clinical risk assessment
- Clear logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach to clinical practice
**Desirable**
- Previous experience of working in the NHS.
- Resuscitation (ALS/APLS/ATLS/ETC) course instructor
- Dual accreditation in allied specialties
**Quality Improvement**
**Essential**
- Evidence of involvement in Quality Improvement work
**Audit and Evidence-based Practice**
**Desirable**
- Additional qualification in QI work
**Management and Administrative Skills**
**Essential**
- Understanding of Clinical Governance
- A willingness to accept responsibility and provide leadership
- Awareness of current relevant developments within the wider NHS
**Desirable**
- Additional management qualification
- Extended experience of leading Clinical Governance Processes
**Teaching**

- Training of junior doctors
