A key role within the Scottish Power Renewables construction team focussing on the delivery of large scale renewables projects, predominantly wind power. Reporting to the Construction Director, the Principal Project Manager will be responsible for the safedelivery of renewables projects.
In respect of construction projects necessary to deliver the SPR strategy, support the Construction Director (and Principal Project Manager where appropriate) by leading multi-disciplinary project teams and take lead responsibility for project strategy, controland delivery ensuring value to the business is maximised within acceptable risk parameters.
Accountability
Undertake line management responsibilities in accordance with business requirements.
Lead and manage a number of multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring the projects are on programme and within budget.
Lead and recommend appropriate commercial strategies to the Construction Director in a structured and robust manner.
Lead and provide input to all commercial agreements and contracts to ensure Project risks are mitigated.
Ensure all key decisions are supported by sufficient due diligence and investigation.
Lead and manage the production of design and build specifications.
Lead and manage the tender assessment process for multi-million pound contracts and consultancy agreements.
Lead discussions and negotiations with contractors.
Liaise and coordinate with external suppliers and contractors to ensure delivery specifications are met.
Manage interfaces between the main contractors (typically turbine, infrastructure, grid and electrical equipment contractors).
Successfully resolve contractor claims.
Assist the Construction Director in selecting and implementing the appropriate resources and organisation structure to effectively manage the construction projects.
Allocate and manage construction team resources to provide input, support and construction expertise to the Development teams.
Provide input and support to the Investment & Strategy Team in considering investment opportunities through reviewing the technical, and construction aspects of potential acquisition projects.
Prepare and present investment cases where appropriate.
Manage and hold project budget delivery responsibility for a number of projects ensuring budgets are delivered.
Utilise and effectively implement the standard SPR project management tools on all projects and, where applicable, promote and implement new tools/systems to improve the standardisation of SPR project management.
Manage and ensure all deliverables meet operational requirements.
Pre-construction and as required during construction, negotiate and agree interfaces/conditions/leases with key stakeholders in order to facilitate the successful delivery of the projects.
Ensure a high standard of health and safety awareness is maintained through encouraging safe behaviours within and outwith direct reports, contractors and other stakeholders.
Act as coach/mentor to staff within the team on project/contract management issues and provide support and direction to assistant project managers and project managers to enable them to undertake the above functions more effectively.
Take a key role at lessons learnt sessions to continually improve business practices and processes and ensure best practice is shared between projects.
At short notice, act upon and deliver ad-hoc projects without losing focus on major ongoing projects.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Professional Qualification
Significant Construction Management experience, including windfarm construction.
Track record of successfully leading multi-discipline teams in the delivery of large scale £multi-million projects through pre-construction, construction to operation transition stages.
Experience of negotiating and managing detailed commercial construction contracts.
Experience and detailed understanding of technical due diligence
Ability to translate technical detail into commercial impact
Health & Safety - minimum NEBOSH qualification
Tenacity, persistence and determination to succeed
Proactive people manager, leader and motivator.
Excellent interpersonal skills, operating confidently at senior management level
Excellent report writing and presentation skills
Ability to identify and match resources and skills to appropriate project roles
Ability to communicate effectively with SP Renewables management and with contractors
High capacity for change and experience of leading others through change.
Sound planning and analysis skills with the ability to look forward and anticipate problems and thereafter plan and implement mitigating solutions.
Ability to manage people effectively to deliver required outputs in a timely manner
Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
Developed contractual awareness.
Planning and Organising
Manage and resolve a range of issues on projects covering technical/operational project matters
Successfully manage the expectations of the Construction Director with regards to project delivery
Identify and develop knowledge and awareness of other team members.
Successfully integrate the services of various support functions within SPR to maximise productivity and effectiveness of project delivery.
Balance technical detail with commercial needs and provide recommendations, taking into account all relevant risks.
Ensure that all recommendations are documented and sufficient due diligence exists to support decisions (whether internal or external diligence).
Defend and stand by recommendations but also recognise when alternative solutions may be preferable.
Present decisions and recommendations to the Construction (and Operations Director where appropriate) in a structured and robust manner.
Effectively manage people and resources as necessary to successfully deliver the projects.
