The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department is based on one site in Scunthorpe although antenatal and gynaecology clinics and theatre sessions also occur in Goole Hospital, 30 miles to the west. The maternity unit, NICU and administrative offices are all located within the Queen’s Building in Scunthorpe. Antenatal clinics, gynaecology out-patients and colposcopy and the gynaecology in-patients beds are all located within the newly-opened Women’s Health Unit, again within the Queen’s Building.

The gynaecology ward is housed within a new Unit. We have facilities for outpatient hysteroscopy and colposcopy, early pregnancy assessment, pregnancy advisory including the provision of medical terminations, MVAC and preoperative assessment. Preoperative assessment, medical terminations, appointments for hyperemesis and early pregnancy assessment are nurse based with medical lead. We also have the use of a variable number of day beds in the day care unit. Ultrasound scanning in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is generally performed by sonographers from the X-ray Department and Mr Roberts, Fetal Medicine Consultant. This department provides a comprehensive ultrasound service including a limited out of hours availability. The antenatal clinic is equipped with two modern scanners including facilities for Doppler and vaginal scans. Three extra mobile ultrasound scanners are available for use on Labour ward, antenatal clinic and antenatal ward. The scan department is supported by one nurse and one midwife sonographer and three weekly consultant fetal medicine clinics.

The post holder’s primary responsibility is the day to day care of the patients in their allocated ward and taking part in the 1st ON CALL ROTA. The post holder will receive instruction in procedures and help with management from senior colleagues. He/she will be expected to know their patients in detail and to present them on ward rounds and handover. He/she will be responsible for chasing up results of investigations using SBAR agreed on the ward round.
