Your new role

As a Senior Policy Advisor in the Strategic Safety Team, you will lead complex projects to support the development and operationalisation of effective road safety strategy throughout National Highways. You will coach, guide, and provide technical adviceto your direct report(s), to support them in their work and in their professional development.

You will provide specialist and complex technical advice and guidance to support the delivery of KPI1 - the reduction of deaths and serious injuries on the SRN - and help move National Highways towards its ambition for zero harm. You will contribute to NationalHighways activities within and across the Safe System.

What you’ll be leading on:
You will provide specialist technical road safety advice and guidance to National Highways, its contractors and suppliers.
Working in partnership, you will review and create new evidence
- based road safety-focused strategy, policy and operational practice.
Providing technical advice and guidance on a range of specialist topics including but not limited to the use of iRAP as both performance tracker and source of countermeasures, and collision investigation & data gathering.
Leading on a range of projects representing specialist themes within the Safe System approach to road casualty reduction.
This position includes a Line Management role. You will provide guidance and direction to your direct reports, supporting them to prioritise work, deliver their personal objectives and develop professionally.
This role relies on building effective working relationships across the business. You will engage with stakeholders across National Highways and externally to understand their business needs, to promote and gain their commitment to our strategic objectivesand solutions, and to identify opportunities to bring operational practice into line with our strategic priorities.
You will plan and manage project activities and resources, identifying risks and appropriate mitigation and reporting progress, to ensure delivery of project objectives on time and on budget.
You will manage external expert and consultancy support; and evaluate and act on such advice to ensure objectives are achieved using resulting research to build company intelligence and creative solutions.
You will document technical solutions and communicate to all stakeholders, to support implementation and to ensure the availability of audit evidence.
To be successful

A relevant degree with relevant post-graduate (or equivalent work experience) or membership of a relevant professional institution
Experience of developing evidence-based strategy, policy and ensuring that this is translated into operational practice
Previous background in risk management and casualty reduction in a road safety setting would be an advantage
Ability to collaborate with others to set standards and implement best practices, whilst dealing constructively with setbacks
Stakeholder management skills, with evidence of successful engagement with both internal and external clients and key stakeholders
Strong networking and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and present results
Line management qualities including ability to coach, guide and support direct reports
Experience of delivering complex projects and programmes.
