**Job summary**:
We are looking for exceptional staff to join the UK public inquiry into the Covid-19 pandemic, to learn lessons and better protect the people of the UK. From being announced in 2021 to full public hearings, which have just commenced, the Inquiry continues to move at pace and make national news. The pandemic affected everyone in different ways. In order to hear from those who suffered hardship and loss, and scrutinise both the decision making and impact, there is a significant amount of work to be undertaken.

We are sponsored by the Cabinet Office, however the Inquiry sits independently from the Government.

**Job description**:
This is a brilliant opportunity for an ambitious researcher to support one of the most substantial and wide-reaching inquiries in UK history. Your work will directly contribute to establishing a definitive factual account of how the pandemic affected the UK, and developing evidence-based recommendations to ensure that lessons are learned for the future.

As a G7 lead researcher, you will be joining the Inquiry’s growing Research and Analysis team to support its three functions:
i.) Identifying and evaluating evidence on the UK’s response to and impact of the pandemic to provide the Inquiry’s legal teams with interpretation of existing research, often at pace.

iii.) Oversight and support of qualitative and quantitative research projects, such as the Inquiry’s listening exercise (Every Story Matters) and a large piece of qualitative research with children and young people.

The role will contribute to all three of the team’s functions, which will require work with external partners - such as arranging for reports from experts and commissioning research projects - as well as in-house work such as analysis, evidence appraisal and research support for other teams within the Inquiry.

A significant responsibility of this role is to set up and lead a flagship research programme, including a large and complex qualitative study into children and young people’s experiences of the pandemic. The research programme will require the building and maintaining of excellent working relationships with external partners - such as interest groups and academics - as well as effective contract and project management of external research suppliers.

You will work flexibly with others in the Research and Analysis team, a supportive and multi-disciplinary team headed up by a Grade 6 head of research and analysis. Our team sits within the Policy, Research, Analysis and Legal Ops (PRAL) directorate, and we enjoy friendly, supportive and dynamic working relationships with our policy, legal, safeguarding and programme management colleagues.

The Inquiry has already begun four modules - pandemic preparedness, core UK and devolved administration decision making and governance, impact on healthcare systems, vaccines and therapeutics - and a further two modules have been announced on procurement and the care sector. The Inquiry’s future work is likely to include investigations on topics such as education and children, the social care sector, contact tracing, and the impact on business and the economy.

**Person specification**:
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

- Overseeing commissioned research projects, from study design through to the final report. The most significant responsibility will be the set up and management of a qualitative study with children and young people. This will involve close management of relationships with external suppliers to ensure the evidence meets the Inquiry’s requirements.
- Contributing to the team’s programme of expert reports, by liaising with academics and experts across sectors such as public health, political governance, education and care settings, to develop a critical evidence base for each of the Inquiry’s modules.
- Evaluating the evidence and lessons from the Inquiry’s research projects, including the Listening Exercise that aims to capture the views and experiences of the British public at large.
- Contributing to the design and delivery of internal research and analysis activities to be used by the Inquiry in its investigations and potential recommendations for change. This will inc
