We are looking for an excellent problem solver to work within our depot maintenance team, to ensure our customers get the best possible service, through an excellently maintained, reliable fleet.

As a Skilled Train Maintainer/Driver, you'll be responsible for servicing and moving our Trains around depot. you’ll play a vital role within our TrainCare Centres to ensure that trains are properly maintained, prepped and ready to go back into customer service in a timely manner.

Whilst you will report into our Outstation Depot Supervisors, you'll ensure the vitality of our trains by completing reports and providing updates, contributing to the efficiency of Northern's rail service.

Part of this role will expect you to move trains around the TrainCare Centre, therefore you will have to attend our driver psychometric testing centre in Leeds and Depot Train Driver training course in either Leeds or Manchester.

It’s an exciting time to join our engineering team, as we are transforming and developing skill-sets, to help us get the right people, on the right units, at the right time. You’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning and including nights, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 45 minutes’ drive of our TrainCare Centre.

**Key responsibilities**:
***This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:

- You’ll play a key role in ensuring our trains are properly maintained and serviced at out outstations, to ensure we get them back into service for our passengers
- You’ll move and shunt the trains around the TrainCare centre as required, to keep things moving
- You’ll be responsible for fault finding and figuring out the best course of action, based on your knowledge and the support of others
- You’ll ensure compliance with all working instructions, standards and rules and regulations, whilst assisting in the refuelling and service of our trains in various TrainCare Centres.

**About You**:
We expect you to be qualified with a level 3 NVQ or a recognised apprenticeship and have the experience and practical ability of electrical and mechanical systems. You’ll need to be able to work as part of a team and maintain optimum concentration at all times.

You don’t need previous driving experience as our training course offers all the training you need. You’ll spend your first 6 weeks taking part in classroom based learning in either Leeds or Manchester, followed by up to 6 months training within our TrainCare Centres, with our full support as you develop your skills. We’ll expect 100% commitment from you on this rewarding yet demanding programme, but our Training Team will be with you all the way when it comes to ongoing assessments and knowledge checks

- What’s really important is an ability to work to instructions and rules and regulations and to think on your feet in sometimes difficult situations
- We’ll expect 100% commitment from you on this rewarding yet demanding programme, but our Training Team will be with you all the way when it comes to ongoing assessments and knowledge checks

And don’t forget that our selection process includes a safety critical medical assessment, that covers general health, ECG, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing, so there are some essential requirements for you to meet:

- Live within 45-minute car journey from the TrainCare Centre you work from.
- Not have defective colour vision.
- Obtain a pass to an enhanced level on the Train Driver Psychometric Assessments, which are valid for 5 years*
- Commit to working early, late and weekend shifts - without relying on public transport.

** We have our own Psychometric Assessment Centre, to enable you to take the Train Driver Psychometric Assessment - providing you have not previously failed them on two occasions or taken them within the last 6 months.**
