**SECTION 1- MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**PROFESSIONAL / CLINICAL**:
To plan therapeutic interventions and modify and extend programmes of therapy.

To implement the carry-over of speech and language programmes as directed by the speech and language therapist including on wards and in clients’ own homes, carrying out speech therapy tasks and programmes to the requirements of therapists in the adult team.

To see adults individually on an in-patient, out-patient or domiciliary basis in order to carry out specific programmes as set by Speech and Language Therapist.

To take responsibility for own workload and arrange own timetable.

**ADMINISTRATIVE / MANAGERIAL**:
To prepare speech and language therapy rooms in readiness for therapy

To prepare speech and language therapy materials as requested by speech and language therapist

To ensure that all equipment and resources are maintained in readiness for use.

Monitoring stock to ensure supplies are readily available for Speech and Language Therapists.

To carry out specific client-related administration tasks, e.g. photocopying of materials, booking appointments, making and receiving telephone calls as appropriate.

To be proficient in, and use as required, Boardmaker computer programme.

To identify and prepare appropriate written material for clients, carers and others.

To record activities and complete statistical return as required.

To participate/undertake audit or surveys as appropriate.

To appreciate limitations of role and seek assistance/advice as appropriate.

To be familiar with and adhere to Trust, Directorate and Departmental policies and procedures.

**HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT**:
To provide peer support to other technical instructors and assistants.

To assist in the induction of newly qualified speech and language therapists.

To deliver aspects of training according to pre-agreed and designed plan in conjunction with the therapist.

To assist speech and language therapist in identifying training needs of others, e.g. carers, colleagues.

SECTION 2- KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

To liaise with carers and other professionals (e.g. therapists, nurses) regarding client’s progress and management, where tact and sensitivity are required, and report back to the speech and language therapist.

To have good interpersonal and communication skills, and to be able to relate well to both clients and professionals.

To overcome barriers to communication in working with clients and their families/carers; some clients will have significant difficulties with speech, language and communication. Some may also have hearing impairments, learning difficulties or psychological or emotional difficulties.

To understand basic approaches to encouraging speech, language and communication in adults; this includes working with adults on an individual basis.

To monitor clients progress and to evaluate their response to the SLT activities.
