**Summary**:
- To be leading a work group of specialist veterinary surgeons, bioveterinary scientists and animal technicians in Animal Sciences of the Pathology & Animal Sciences Department, leading the delivery of live animal phases of infectious disease research and statutory disease surveillance functions, ensuring compliance with Home Office regulations (ASPA), developing and promoting the animal science discipline, and managing specialist staff and facilities within APHA. Developing the role as AWERB Chair deputy as part of essential succession planning.**Job description**:
- Main areas of work include:
- Animal science project delivery and capability leadership:
- Science Development:
- Lead and develop the research undertaken by Animal Sciences including its published output, with particular emphasis on clinical research, and manage Animal Sciences’ relationship with its research partners.
- Staff and facility management:
- Line management of senior animal scientists and/or Named Veterinary Surgeons, functional management of scientific staff working in animal facilities. Responsibility for oversight of livestock and high disease containment animal facilities (up to ACDP3, SAPO4), with responsibility for animal disease biosecurity and Home Office compliance, staff training and performance management.
- Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) responsiblities and associated duties outlined in the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. This includes leadership of compliance and implementation of APHA’s Animal Welfare Standards with the animal technician team. They are required to obtain a PIL and E2PPL certificate and may act as Project Licence holders.
- Deputy Named Training and Competency Officer as outlined in the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act. Providing management and leadership for training carried out in Animal Sciences. Covering compliance of up to 150 personal licence holders and Schedule 1 competency.
- Contract Management:
- Being the named contact for some of the contracts APHA holds with external customers. Involved in contract renewal exercise together with APHA’s contract management team. Leading on training and development of increased capability in order to fulfil the contract requirements.
- Corporate activities, budget oversight, administrative responsibilities, CPD and other duties as required, including on call in a 1 in 5 rota, duty rotas and emergency response.
- Animal science project delivery and capability leadership:
- Staff and facility management/supervision:
- Line management of senior animal scientists and/or Named Veterinary Surgeons. Management oversight of a range of animal facilities from ACDP1 - ACDP3 and up to SAPO4, plus livestock facilities as appropriate. Ensuring compliance with all Health and Safety and Quality policies in APHA. Supervision of scientists working in animal facilities as appropriate. Offering advice to facility project management and supporting the science centre site development.
- Named Veterinary Surgeon:
- Provision of advice on implementation of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act. Ensure veterinary care and attention is given to a range of experimental animals as appropriate. Ensure the veterinary team can deliver adequate veterinary cover and services at all times. A rota is shared with the other NVSs (1 in 4 or 5). Advise on the health and welfare needs of a range of species, and the implementation of the 3Rs. Participate in study planning, execution and reviews, and ensuring appropriate records and documentation is kept, quality and safety standards are adhered to. They will be involved in the training of new NVS staff.

- The job holder will support the NTCO by providing management and leadership for training carried out in the Animal Sciences Unit. Covering compliance of up to 150 PILs and Schedule 1 competency.
