**Job summary**:
His Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNBP) has been an integral part of the city since 1194. It is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy's surface ships, including the new aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth; HMS Prince of Wales; the formidable Type 45 destroyers; Type 23 frigates; and mine countermeasures and fishery protection squadrons.

The base is a major employer and provides lodging facilities to RN personnel serving at the base and in Portsmouth-based ships.

HMNBP is one of three naval bases providing enabling support as part of the nation’s defence strategy. In doing so, HMNBP seeks to improve through science and technology to strengthen its security and defence at home and overseas. This requires continuous improvements in building capacity, capability and resilience through its people. It is the home base for assigned ships and ship’s companies preparing for operations. Chaplaincy is at the heart of the spiritual life and pastoral work of HMNB Portsmouth. Although firmly rooted in the Christian tradition, it is committed to providing hospitality and pastoral care to all those who may visit or work at HMNB Portsmouth, regardless of rank or faith tradition. The Verger is an ancient office within the Christian Church, whose job it is to care for the church buildings, to support those who work within them and to participate fully in the preparation and delivery of liturgical services. As a key member of the Chaplaincy team, the Verger contributes to the mission and objectives of Naval Chaplaincy.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

**Job description**:

- The Verger is required to work 37 hours a week excluding breaks. This includes Sunday working, and some Saturdays, for which no additional premium is payable. Due to working weekends a rest day is taken during the week. Leave may not be taken over major events and Church Festivals, such as Advent Sunday, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter, Harvest, All Saints / All Souls and Remembrance-tide.
- Additional hours worked may be taken as time off in lieu or as overtime, as allowed by prior agreement with the Chaplaincy Team Leader (CTL). Overtime must have prior authorisation for the hours worked and be claimed within 7 days of the overtime undertaken.**Person specification**:

- Key Responsibilities:

- a. To receive and welcome all visitors to St Ann's Church and Chaplaincy providing hospitality as required.
- b. Preparing for all services in St Ann's and supporting the officiating clergy, lay assistants and members of the congregation in their duties. This will involve compiling and submitting weekly gate lists in accordance with naval base security procedures and occasionally escorting visitors to and from the church.
- c. To assist with liturgical services by verging and serving as required.
- d. To be responsible for the upkeep of the linens, robes, vestments and church furniture.
- e. To assist the current administrator as the business unit point of contact (BUPOC) for the chaplaincy team.
- f. Be responsible for church and Haven supplies and stationery, anticipating routine requirements.
- g. Act as clerk for services, baptism, banns and wedding registers.
- h. Act as custodian for St Ann’s Articles in Use (PL33) and valuable items, mustering requests within 7 working days and preparing them for audit.
- i. Produce the weekly pew sheet and any orders of service in a timely fashion.
- j. Liaise with Committal of Ashes families and undertakers, receiving, preparing and storing caskets of ashes from families / undertakers as required and assisting bereaved visitors coming to view the memorial books. This requires a driving licence in order to drive the caskets around the naval base in the MOD chaplaincy car. The caskets each weigh approximately 10 kg and so the
