This client is the leading provider of NHS wheelchair services throughout the UK, specialising exclusively in wheelchair services. Their services are designed with customer care as a priority, and their teams provide a genuine caring and holistic approach inall they do.
- Hold, prioritise, plan and organise your own caseload of service users; your work is managed, rather than supervised, and results/outcomes are assessed at agreed intervals through clinical supervision; you will be guided by precedent and policy
- Provide high quality, service user focused assessment and prescription of manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, buggies and seating
- Work within professional standards and clinical guidelines, promoting best practice and undertaking all aspects of clinical duties 4. Provide clinical advice to other members of the team
- Have competence within the specialism of wheelchair services, underpinned by background theoretical knowledge
- Supervise and allocate work to rehabilitation assistants and rehabilitation engineering technicians
The job holder will work in a variety of settings including clinics, community centres, and service users' homes according to service requirements. In addition, they will participate in clinical governance activity, including CPD and developing and implementingquality improvements within the service.
- As part of duty clinician role, use clinical reasoning skills to identify appropriate referrals and prescriptions, and prioritise referrals in accordance with required services and the eligibility criteria
- Build and maintain key relationships with referring services, facilitating appropriate referrals and prescriptions
- Gain valid, informed consent for assessment and treatment interventions, and for sharing of information with other health and social care professionals/organisations
- Carry out detailed assessment of service users' mobility, posture and seating needs, considering tissue viability, their environment and social arrangements
- Work with a variety of clinical presentations requiring comparison of a range of treatment options
- With physical dexterity and co-ordination, clinically assess service users; support service users to mobilise for transfers; undertake elemental postural assessment
- Assess, develop and implement programmes of high quality care, providing advice to service users, carers and other healthcare professionals showing respect and compassion
- Facilitate trial of potentially suitable equipment, both in the clinic and in the community
- Select and prescribe appropriate and cost effective wheelchair and seating equipment, demonstrating and recording sound clinical reasoning
- Fit and adjust equipment to meet clinical needs and functional aims, whilst providing instruction in its safe use, care and maintenance
- Identify service users' needs for onward referral outside the wheelchair service, liaising with and referring them to these agencies where appropriate
- Write clear and concise clinical reports for service user records
- The work pattern will be unpredictable; concentration will be required during clinical assessments; regular interruptions are to be expected
- Hold professional accountability for all aspects of own work, ensuring this is within professional standards and clinical guidelines
- Actively engage with clinical supervision to identify and develop professional, clinical and service needs
- Provide advice to other health and social care professionals through informal training, advice and joint working
- Demonstrate respect, compassion, empathy and sensitivity to clients who may have complex emotional and physical conditions such as fear of falling, anxiety, challenging behaviour, pain and other physical and social concerns
- Contribute to and implement policy and procedure reviews and changes within own role/area
Qualifications Required:
- BSc or diploma in occupational therapy
- HCPC registration
Desirable:
- Post graduate qualification
- Member of relevant special interest group
