**Main Objectives of Role**:
- To provide an outstanding library service to Bury Church of England High School.
- To take a lead role alongside the lead person for literacy policy and practice in raising literacy standards across the school.
- Supervise student librarians
- Work with the trust librarians to share best practice and support the development of all and external library professionals if applicable
**Main Duties**
Organisation
- To be responsible for the provision of a student focussed library reception service, issuing books and reminder letters to borrowers
- To take the lead role in the day to day running of the library encouraging pupils to develop of love of reading and literacy
- To work collaboratively to raise the profiles of reading for pleasure with students.
- To take a leading role in producing and managing a calendar of events throughout the year to celebrate key events including; World Book Day, Black History Month
- To provide updates on successful reader and celebrate those successes through assemblies and other forms of communication.
- To ensure the library section on the website is up to date with relevant reading lists and suggested texts appropriate to reading ages of pupils
- To ensure the library is welcoming environment for all with up to date displays for all readers of secondary school age.
- To manage the booking system for the library.
- To assist staff with Star Reading Tests and report results to teaching staff
- To assist students in selecting the appropriate book choices. Set certification levels and issue certificates where required.
- To take a leading role in raising the profile of the library and its facilities in such a way as to increase the number of students using the available resources, fostering and encouraging a love of reading amongst students - e.g., organising book fairs and other activities and using resources such as the library TV screen to promote and develop reading skills
- Ensure the library area is maintained to a high standard, ensuring tidiness, cleanliness, quality displays and up to date information
- To identify and develop links with external library services to improve the school library provision and keep abreast of new initiatives
- To support the students working in the library, either as part of lesson activity directed by teachers or those students working independently and those using the library during break or lunchtime
- To assist students with school systems and administration which may include supporting students with school reward systems
- Maintain the stock room, ensuring ordering of supplies and stationery as required
- To communicate with teachers to share and celebrate what they are reading
**Supervise student librarians**
- Undertake induction/training/mentoring of student librarians as required by:
- Taking opportunities to praise and reward exceptional service
- Ensuring regular student librarian briefings
- Assigning work to student librarians as required
**Administration**
- Provide organisational and induction of new persons to the library protocols, systems and expectations to staff new pupils
- Set up trust library software reports to assess usage levels and identify improvement potential
- Undertake general clerical activities associated with the running of the library (photocopying, filing, typing etc)
**Resources**
- Be responsible for the selection and management of library resources, including the procurement of books to support the reading programme
- Be responsible for the management of a small expenditure within an agreed budget
- Be responsible for the regular audit of resources
- To ensure the school library software is used to maintain accurate records of book stock
- To ensure the library IT resource area is maintained in good condition, are accounted for and ready for student use in collaboration with IT staff.
- To provide resources to meet specific academic departmental requests
- To manage the booking of the library classroom
- Provide advice and guidance to staff and others on issues in relation to library systems and procedures
