- Job description- Climate Change is the biggest risk we face. We are planning for future flood scenarios including a rise in global temperature. As a Team Member in our local Field Teams, you will be maintaining our river and flood defence assets and responding to flooding and pollution incidents. You will be working as part of a diverse team and will help to accomplish routine maintenance, efficiently, safely and to a high standard following our Health and Safety policies. You need to be able to communicate professionally with our partners and members of the public.
This hands-on and physical role involves working as part of a team, outside in all weathers. You will be involved in a wide range of activities, from vegetation management using strimmer’s, hedge cutters, to clearing debris/blockages from the watercourse to tree work using chainsaws and chippers. We also undertake machine work driving tractors/excavators/telehandlers. You will receive nationally recognised training in all required skills.
You will participate in our 24-hour call-out rosters, responding as a team to operate our assets including pumps, flood gates and temporary flood barriers. Playing an active role in protecting homes and businesses from flood risk.
We work with government, local councils, businesses, civil society groups and communities to enhance wildlife and biodiversity nationally through our commitment to creating a betting place.
You will be enrolled on our mandatory nationally recognised level 3 apprenticeship
- Water Environment Worker and given support to complete this qualification.
- The team- Field teams protect people, property and the environment by maintaining and operating flood and coastal risk management assets and responding to incidents.
Operatives have a range of technical skills they use to deliver watercourse & asset maintenance and construction projects.
The teams handle a variety of specialist equipment including tractor work, chainsawing and small boat work.
We also work across the country when called upon to assist other areas in incident response and environmental incidents.
- Experience/skills required- We are looking for those with hands on experience, working out on the ground with good communication skills. It would be an advantage to have the desire, knowledge or experience in some of the following:
To be working out on the ground in all weather conditions
- Good communication skills
- Self-motivation, with the ability to work well in a team
- Personal skills requirement: taking initiative, good time management, flexibility, problem solving and decision making
- Basic understanding of IT technology including smart phones and tablets
- Willingness to learn new practical and technological skills
- Full valid UK driving licence essential
- Literacy and numeracy skills

Some experience in asset operation or maintenance/incident response/use of equipment/tools is an advantage (however full training will be provided. You will be trained and supported to contribute to our response to incidents inside and outside of normal hours

Field Teams operate on a 9-day fortnight, in addition to 25 days annual leave + bank holidays. Once trained, you will be on a standby roster with scope to enhance the basic salary package.
A full UK valid driving licence is essential
