**Summary**:
The Department for International Trade negotiates trade agreements for the UK and promotes UK Trade and Investment around the world. Within DIT, the Trade in Services team develops services trade policy and leads services negotiations in Free Trade Agreements and in multilateral organisations such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Our team aims to open markets for UK suppliers and improve rules on services trade, supporting the growth and success of the UK’s services sector.

This role is a high-profile, fast paced and exciting one covering the challenging area of mobility policy with significant levels of Ministerial, Whitehall and international exposure, working at the heart of the UK’s trade negotiation programme. You will oversee multiple services negotiations, line-managing a number of mobility chapter leads across our FTA negotiations. You will have responsibility for the high profile and politically sensitive UK mobility policy, playing an active role across the department, with Whitehall and with stakeholders.

You will play an active role across the department, with Whitehall and stakeholders to ensure UK trade policy for services supports our ambitions to be a global leader for trade in services. You will also play an important leadership role in the team and within the wider directorate and Trade Negotiations Group.

**Job description**:
In this role you will:

- Provide leadership to a large team (10+) of policy leads and negotiators, ensuring DIT delivers world-class mobility outcomes.
- Provide overall strategic direction to the branch, working closely with other team leads and DIT country negotiation teams.
- Directly manage mobility chapter leads to provide overarching leadership across a range of bilateral negotiations.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of UK mobility policy, working closely with teams across the department and with other Government Departments (in particular, the Home Office) and with external stakeholders to ensure evidence-based policy development.
- Build diverse networks inside and outside of DIT and leverage those to deliver strong outcomes for DIT in mobility negotiations.
- Actively contribute to the leadership, strategy and direction of the services team and wider Services, Investment and Digital ‘cluster’.

**Hybrid working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

**Responsibilities**:
**Essential Criteria**
- Excellent strategic thinking and high intellectual energy, able to draw strategy and links out of complex and fast evolving contexts.
- Exceptional policy development skills and an ability to establish yourself quickly as the recognised Whitehall expert.
- Good judgement including the personal credibility to be a trusted advisor to Ministers and senior officials.
- An engaging and adaptable leadership style, which connects with people at all levels.
- The ability to lead and manage programme delivery at pace in a high-pressured, politically uncertain environment and work with ambiguity.
- A strong track record of delivering through collaboration and partnering within government, where there are multiple interests and potentially competing viewpoints.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Knowledge of trade policy (particularly services trade policy), economics and/or regulation.
- Experience of leading negotiations or playing a leadership role in an international environment.
