**College of Science & Engineering / School of Engineering / Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids**
**Full-time**:35 hours per week**
**Fixed-term: up to 36 months**
The School of Engineering seeks to appoint a Research Associate in Advanced Laser Diagnostics for Spray Research. This Research Associate position will contribute to the project entitled ‘Unresolved fluid mechanics at liquid/gas interfaces for primary breakup of atomizing sprays’ within the Institute of Multiscale Thermofluids.
**The Opportunity**:
This Research Associate position will contribute to the project ‘ _Unresolved fluid mechanics at liquid/gas interfaces for primary breakup of atomizing sprays’ _within the Institute of Multiscale Thermofluids at the University of Edinburgh, which is funded by the European Research Council and in collaboration with colleagues at RWTH Aachen University and Sandia National Laboratories.
This project focuses on experimental measurements that help address unresolved questions related to the fluid dynamics at liquid/gas interfaces (LGI) associated with primary breakup. We will image LGIs using pulse-burst Ballistic Imaging as well as Two-Photon Laser Induced Fluorescence. Those methods will be combined with wavelet-based Optical Flow (wOF) to resolve velocity and acceleration of liquid fluid at the LGI as the liquid core breaks into primary drops. These advanced methods will be combined with traditional in-nozzle imaging (e.g., shadowgraphy, Schlieren) to study the primary breakup flow dynamics associated with (a) cavitation, (b) turbulence, and (c) shear.
This role is UE07 and is available on a fixed term basis for up to 36 months.
A full list of main responsibilities and the knowledge, skills and experience required for the role can be found in the full job description below.
**Your skills and attributes for success**:
- Proven track record with laser diagnostics for fluid mechanic research
- Experience in spray research
- Strong track-record in publishing in peer reviewed scientific journals
- Experience or theoretical knowledge of optical flow
- Strong understanding of fluid mechanics and multiphase flows
