The post holder is required to support the Prevent team and service model under the direction of the Prevent Sergeant (GMP) and Team Manager/Service Manager (LSCFT).
The Specialist Mental Health Practitioner, a professionally registered Nurse to work within the Prevent forum, providing assessment of Mental Health, Learning Disability, Complex Health and social needs, liaison, referral and guidance for persons who may be vulnerable.
The Specialist Mental Health Practitioner is someone with a clinical qualification and experience and knowledge of a range of vulnerabilities and/or with specialist knowledge and experience of working with groups likely to be disadvantaged by their involvement in the justice system.

The Specialist Mental Health Practitioner will liaise with and provide timely information for a range of agencies including criminal justice agencies to assist with decision making. This may involve providing written and verbal reports to Police and Court Professionals.

The role of the Specialist Mental health Practitioner is an exciting opportunity for a Practitioner to be an integral part of pioneering work which is assisting with implementing change in the way vulnerabilities are identified and addressed in relation to Prevent and the wider CONTEST Strategy.

The role of the Specialist Mental Health Practitioner has been developed with the aim to provide an additional level of safeguarding and health input to those individuals who have been referred in to the team who may have mental health problems, neurodiverse conditions and/or learning difficulties and who are at risk of radicalisation.

A fundamental part of the role is being able to identify potential risks from information provided from a variety of sources and to then produce psychological formulations as part of a multi-disciplinary team. These formulations are used to help inform agencies involved directly in the care of the individuals referred in to the team so that appropriate interventions and safeguarding measures can be put in place.

On a daily basis the role requires working closely with police colleagues, screening referrals and advising on cases that are sent in to the team in addition to liaising closely with professionals working with individuals open to the team from a variety of settings.

Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of services including secondary mental health care across this area. Specialist provision comprises inpatient child and adolescent mental health services, perinatal mental health and forensic services including low and medium secure care.

The Trust also provides a range of physical health and well-being services in the community alongside a range of partners in the Lancashire, Cumbria and Sefton area.
