Active Outdoors Assistant

Gibside has a reputation for the quality of its play offer for families. Summer 2024 saw over 48,000 people visit Gibside with many of those visiting our flagship event 'Summer of Play '.
This role also involves setting up the activities, welcoming families daily, working as part of a team with staff and volunteers, and ensuring that the presentation standards of the play offer remain high throughout the summer, providing the safe and clean experience visitors expect. This role involves manual handling, as you will be setting up activities and equipment.
**Hours**:37.5 hours per week. 5 days a week. This role will involve work at weekends and possibly on bank holidays, as these are the busiest and most exciting times at Gibside.
**Duration**:Fixed Term Contract until 14 September 2025
**Salary**:£12.75 an hour
**Interview date**:Wednesday 28th May 2025

What it's like to work here:Reporting to the Visitor Experience Officer, you’ll work within our Programming and Partnerships team at Gibside, made up of the Programming and Partnerships Manager, Senior Programming and Partnerships Officer, and Visitor Experience Officer. You’ll work as part of a team that is passionate about ensuring that everyone who visits Gibside has a great day out, and is able to participate in our activities.
You’ll work at Gibside, a Grade 1-listed Park and Garden which features valley views, woodland, a Palladian chapel, a stable block, a grand ruin, and the Column to Liberty towering above it all. Wildlife and horticulture rich, Gibside is home to Roe deer, Red Kites, amphibian-filled ponds, and a fruitful Walled Garden. You’ll enjoy the benefits of working outdoors in nature.

What you'll be doing:You’ll work as part of a team to set up Gibside for summer, creating a festival feeling by installing bunting, flags, selfie stations and plenty of play equipment. During the summer holidays, you will be responsible for delivering a number of drop-in craft workshops, sports sessions and other activities for our visitors with volunteers.
For this year's Summer of Play national programming event, we are dedicated to a fun and immersive experience, creating play zones across the site to ensure delight at every turn. You will be responsible for setting up play equipment, which will involve manual handling, checking it throughout the day and engaging with families on the many different play opportunities around the site.
You’ll lead activities that create lasting, joyful memories for our visitors over the summer holidays, such as sports and crafts. You’ll deliver a great visitor experience and be a champion for Gibside. You'll be enthusiastic about inspiring children and families and enjoy spending time outdoors in this active role.
You'll contribute to the evaluation of our Summer of Play through engaging with families and finding out what they enjoyed and what could be improved. You'll also work alongside our volunteer teams who support our programming and partnerships team with the delivery of events and activities.
