Peer Support Worker

Whitchurch, United Kingdom Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Full time

This is a new and innovative opportunity for a carer peer support worker to join Solace. The central aim of Solace is to support unpaid carers and those they care for, by meeting their changing needs through listening and adapting support that is offered in the form of emotional support, education and information. This is met by means of face-to-face meetings, support groups or by telephone. In addition, the role will support the Recovery College in the co-production of design, delivery, evaluation and accreditation of a range of recovery focussed courses, programmes and workshops for service users and their supporters and staff. The Recovery and Wellbeing College is the first co-produced, peer led service in the NHS in Wales. The College offers an educative setting for students who include service users, people with lived experience, family members, cares and professionals, to develop knowledge and skills to support with mental health challenges and overall wellbeing. The three guiding principles of the College, hope, control and opportunity are central to the way peer support and co-production happen within the college. All courses are co-designed and co-delivered by professionals and peers. The CPSW will be expected to contribute to the development of courses that specifically aim to support unpaid carers in the caring journey.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The role will endeavour to enhance current service provision from a position of lived experience of supporting an individual with a diagnosis of Dementia. Peer support is when people use their own lived experience to support others who are having similar experiences. CPSW use their experiences of being a carer to support families and carers of people who use our services. This role is to compliment the service provided by Solace to inspire and empower carers to support their family members. The CPSW will engage with unpaid carers in a co-productive style to understand their current personal experience of caring and be able to represent and be a voice for carers. Including sharing their own coping, self-help and self-management strategies and supporting carer groups. The CPSW will support unpaid carers to contribute to service development, developing links across third sector organisations that support carers, eg, care collective and representing carers within MHSOP.
