Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is committed to delivering quality mental health services based on the needs of the people who use our services. We believe those that have faced mental health difficulties and found their own path to recovery can provide valuable support to service users trying to find their own way to recovery.
The Central Youth teams are strong and credible, we have a friendly team atmosphere where ideas are welcomed and explored. We are creating the conditions to embrace change whilst always ensuring the basics. We work hard to ensure that from the very moment people access our services to the moment they leave their care will be outstanding.
We are looking to recruit a full-time PSW to join our team. It is desirable that the person in this role have lived experiences of mental health difficulties when they were young and experience of youth mental health services for service users to find the PSW relatable.
The role of Peer Support Worker (PSW) has been developed specifically for people who have lived experience of mental health difficulties. A PSW provides formalised peer support to help service users regain control over their lives and their own unique recovery process. PSWs work with service users, with the aim of supporting them to achieve a better quality of life despite mental health difficulties.
Your time will involve direct contact with service users on a one-to-one basis as well as in group settings. You will be a valued member of our multidisciplinary team, attend our regular team meetings and be provided with supervision and training.
As a PSW you will be acting as a role model by using your own lived experience of recovering from mental health issues, to inspire hope and help service users regain control over their own lives. You will work with service users to help them to develop a belief in their own abilities to deal with various situations; the confidence to have control over their own motivation, behaviour, and social environment; and the ability to successfully achieve their goals in life.
If you are not already an accredited PSW you will be required to complete and pass the NSFT Peer Support Training Programme. In addition, if you don’t already hold a care certificate, or a relevant qualification, you will need to complete one within 12 weeks of starting in post.
Peer Support Training Programme
This six-month programme requires self-study and attending weekly workshops and incorporates a variety of training styles from presentations and videos to group work, role play, and work in pairs, and will require you to complete several assignments including written pieces.
It is essential that applicants read the full job description and person specification in advance. This includes details and dates of training provided, which is mandatory for the role. You are urged to demonstrate within your supporting statement a combination of evidence that reflects your competence to meet the person specification and provide examples of how NSFT Values are an integral part of the way you have and will continue to deliver service.
