Job Title: Residential Child Care Worker

Responsible to: Registered Manager

**Summary Of Responsibilities**
- To work as a member of the staff team in providing direct day to day care of children and young people and to undertake other supportive tasks and duties.
- To ensure that the welfare of the children and young people is paramount.
- As a keyworker, contribute to the development of care plans, to ensure that the individual care plans of children and young people are implemented and progressed.

**Professional Childcare Practice**
- To contribute to the normal development of children and young people through the provision of a healthy lifestyle, a variety of appropriate activities, and a consistent and caring adult role model.
- To assist children and young people in dealing with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
- To be alert to the signs of distress or abuse, and in liaison with other professionals to ensure that the children and young people are monitored and protected.
- To be sensitive to the needs of the children and young people, taking into account of gender, race, culture, language, religion, and sexuality.
- To communicate effectively with children and young people.
- To work effectively with parents/carers in order to maintain contact and maximise opportunities for rehabilitation where appropriate.
- In liaison with other professionals, to contribute to care planning, to participate in reviews and other meeting as required, and to assist in the implementation of care plans.
- To maintain accurate records concerning the children and young people, and to prepare and present reports for meetings as required.
- To provide additional support and comfort to children and young people in distress.
- To provide appropriate control and discipline to children and young people, including, in line with the service policy, use of physical restraint.
- To provide for the physical needs of children and young people as necessary, for example by cooking, washing, ironing, shopping and budgeting or by enabling children and young people to carry out such tasks themselves.

**Relationships with Colleagues**
- To act as a member of the staff team, supporting colleagues and being prepared to receive support if necessary.
- To participate in staff meeting as required.
- To act flexibly, within reasonable bounds, in order to ensure the necessary cover for the residential home.
- To ensure that all relevant information is provided to all colleagues in a timely and appropriate manner.

**Household responsibilities**
- To share in the practical activities necessary to maintain a home.
- To set a high standard in home making.
- To care for the fabric, equipment and the grounds.
- To be accountable for monies allocated for specific purposes.

**Personal**
- To keep abreast of good practice in order to develop skills, knowledge and experience and to attend appropriate training courses.
- To make use of supervision and appraisal according to the service policy in order to enhance personal development.
- To report to a line manager or other appropriate person malpractice or evidence which may suggest it.

**General**
- To ensure the policies and procedures of the service are followed.
- To work shifts including evenings and weekends, and to sleep-in as required as part of a rota.
- To undertake any additional duties appropriate to the post.

**Main Duties**
- To maintain accurate records concerning the children and young people, and to prepare and present reports for meetings as required.
- To share in the practical activities necessary to maintain a home, setting high standards for the fabric, equipment and maintenance of the living environment.
- To attend, contribute and lead regular handover meetings.
- To act as a role model to other staff in good child care practice and provide accurate and up to date information and guidance to staff.
- To assist children and young people in dealing with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
- To establish positive and meaningful relationships with children in placement through effective communication by engaging them in constructive and enjoyable leisure and cultural pursuits and activities.
- To work effectively with parents, carers and other family members in order to maintain positive contact, maximise opportunities for rehabilitation where appropriate and to assist the child in developing a sense of identity and belonging.
- In liaison with other professionals, to contribute to care planning, to participate in reviews and planning meetings as required, to assist in the implementation of individual care plans.
- To provide appropriate control and discipline to children and young people, including, in line with Team Teach techniques, the use of physical restraint.
