We are looking for someone with a recognised security qualification, experience of supervising a team, and a passion to work in a security and invigilation role.

The National Archives is the archive for England, Wales and the United Kingdom. It holds documents ranging from the Domesday Book, Magna Carta and similar iconic records and artefacts to modern government records that have been selected for permanent preservation.

The Document Services Department (DSD) is responsible for the First Point of Customer Contact (FPOCC), document storage and production, and invigilation of The National Archives collection. The collection currently exceeds 11 million documents and expands each year.

As part of the Reader Invigilation Team, your first responsibility is as custodians of the collection, ensuring their preservation and security but you will also serve a vital role in helping all of our Readers make the most of their visit.

On any given day the job holder will undertake varied duties within the Reading Room environment, such as managing the entrance points for the Document Reading Room and the Map and Large Document Reading Room, monitoring CCTV, and undertaking security patrols of the designated areas.

As a custodian of the collection, you will need to be a team player with outstanding interpersonal skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure and have experience of delivering excellent customer service. You will also be a highly motivated, adaptable, and well organised individual, with a diligent and methodical approach. Working collaboratively with the Front of House Team, you will be working in a busy environment and will also act as an ambassador for The National Archives when welcoming visitors and users of our services.

The working pattern for a full-time position is Tuesday - Saturday and includes some late shifts (10:50-19:02) on a Tuesday/Thursday.
