Just Mammals is an ecological consultancy which specialises in providing services with respect
to British protected species, with particular expertise in mammals. Clients range from major
construction companies and local government, to private individuals doing small-scale barn
conversions. The office is based in Brecon, with business activity primarily in mid and south
Wales, and the west of England. The company, which is owned by its long-term staff, offers both
in house and external training opportunities, as well as the opportunity to participate in all
aspects of consultancy and the business.
Just Mammals Limited is looking for an experienced, capable individual to join our small,
expected to take on and successfully oversee simple bat projects and progress to taking on more
complex projects. Depending on expertise and interest, they will be involved in, or have the
opportunity to be trained in a variety of other areas. Applicants are expected to have:
In-depth knowledge of the ecology of British protected species and relevant legislation
At least one NRW protected species licence essential, and NE licence desirable
Additional protected species licences desirable
Familiarity with bat call analysis software packages
At least two years of relevant experience in ecological consultancy
Full clean driving licence and own transport (with business use insurance)
Membership of CIEEM and familiarity with the technical guidance series
A high level quality of written English is required, with good observational skills and
practical field abilities. Working as part of a small team, good communication and
interpersonal skills are needed. A flexible approach is essential, as survey work often
requires a non-standard timetable, with early morning and dusk site assessments. Given the
expected irregular working hours, the successful applicant will need to be based within the
Brecon area, or willing to relocate. Hybrid working will be considered, if desired. Annual
leave allowance will be 20 days in addition to our office Christmas closure. The post is based
off in lieu policy is in operation with annualised hours, and a contributory pension scheme is
also in place.
**What does the job involve**:
Independently, and as part of a team, carrying out field work of habitat and species
surveys and monitoring (bats, botanical, other mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians etc.) to a
high professional standard;
Lead on simple projects and assist with more complex projects, with a view to progression
towards leading more complex projects;
Writing reports for surveys and, depending on experience, a variety of protected species
Preparing quotes for a wide variety of projects
Overseeing simple projects from beginning to completion, including leading teams on site
Liaising with clients and other industry professionals, as well as managing client
expectations
Coordinating survey teams and managing junior staff and survey assistants
Other tasks as reasonable and required.
**Salary band**: £26,780 - £32,960
