**Job summary**:
Two exciting opportunities have arisen to lead the Economic Coercion Team and the Market Distorting Practices, International Strategy & Engagement team in the Department for Business & Trade.

The Head of Economic Coercion and the Head of Market Distorting Practices, International Strategy & Engagement will lead interesting, challenging and important work that really matters to the UK. Addressing economic coercion and market distorting practices is a priority for the UK Government to ensure free and fair trade, maintain the integrity and sustainability of the rules-based multilateral trading system, and support UK businesses.

These are high-profile roles, with considerable Ministerial interest, that will provide ample opportunity for variety, development and stretch. The roles will also be equally rewarding, sitting at the heart of some of the most interesting geopolitical and economic challenges of our time, with potentially far-reaching real-world impacts.

These are new teams and the roles also present strong leadership opportunities: both in terms of building a new team but also in terms of identifying new and innovative ways to address the policy challenges.

**Job description**:
**Head of Economic Coercion**

Key responsibilities will include both international and domestic policy development work:

- Working collaboratively across Whitehall to develop and implement a programme of work to strengthen the rules-based international system to ward against acts of economic coercion.
- Working collaboratively across Whitehall to help develop and implement a programme of work to enhance cooperation with international partners to address acts of economic coercion. This includes leading on DBT input into G7 work on economic coercion.
- Working collaboratively across Whitehall to develop and implement a programme of work to ensure that the UK has the right domestic tools to defend itself against acts of economic coercion.
- Working with analysts to develop a strong evidence base.
- International and business engagement.
- Supporting senior managers and providing briefing and advice where needed.
- Building, leading and managing a team of approx. 7.

The postholder will need to be flexible to take on new workstreams, or amend existing workstreams, as they may evolve.

**Head of **Market Distorting Practices, International Strategy & Engagement**

Key responsibilities include policy development work on market distorting practices as well as coordinating Ministerial, business and international engagement for the wider team:

- Working collaboratively across Whitehall to develop and implement a programme of work to ensure that the UK has the right domestic tools to defend itself against market distorting practices.
- Working collaboratively across Whitehall to develop and implement a programme of work to enhance cooperation with international partners, and to strengthen the rules-based international system, to ward against market distorting practices.
- Working with analysts to develop a strong evidence base.
- Developing and implementing Ministerial, business and international engagement plans, whilst ensuring the team’s engagement strategies respond to the evolving context.
- Overseeing project management, including responsibility for governance arrangements and developing delivery plans where needed, for the wider team.
- Supporting senior managers and providing briefing and advice where needed.
- Building, leading and managing a team of approx. 7.

**Essential Criteria**
- Policy development experience.
- Stakeholder engagement experience.
- Ability to communicate and influence effectively.
- Adaptable, with the ability to flex to changing needs.
- Comfortable working in uncertainty, with the ability to develop proposals at pace and within ambiguous contexts.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Experience of building a team.
- Knowledge and experience of economic security and / or international trade.
