**Park Ranger**:
Job description

Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

Play a key role in protecting Leicester’s parks and open spaces by enforcing local byelaws and environmental regulations, supporting community safety, and providing excellent customer service.

You’ll be joining the Park Services team, part of Neighbourhood & Environmental Services. We maintain safety, cleanliness and community engagement across Leicester’s parks. The team includes Senior Rangers and Parks Rangers who work closely with the Police, ASB officers, and other council services to address littering, dog control, anti-social behaviour, and park byelaw violations. We are currently focusing on reducing ASB hotspots, raising awareness of byelaws, and improving reporting standards through targeted patrols and public engagement.

Rangers are based in Abbey Park and patrol parks and open spaces across the city, on foot or by vehicle. The role involves working outdoors in all weathers, with some flexibility depending on operational needs. This is a full-time, permanent role working 37 hours per week on a shift pattern, which includes evenings, weekends and public holidays. Shift schedules rotate to ensure coverage across key times.

**What you’ll be doing**

As a park ranger you’ll patrol parks and open spaces to detect and address breaches of park byelaws, dog control PSPOs, and littering offences. Through this patrolling you’ll collect evidence, issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs), write reports and attend court when needed. In addition, you’ll conduct health and safety inspections, report defects, and take action to ensure public safety.

Not one day will be the same in this varied role. You’ll liaise with the public, offering clear guidance and signposting to other council services one day and then work closely with police and other services to support awareness events and tackle anti-social behaviour on another.

You’ll be a public facing council representative that will proudly wear uniform and have use of body-worn cameras and personal safety devices, ensuring you, the public and the parks of Leicester City are safe.

**What you’ll need**

This role will involve some aspects of clerical work to log incidents, write accurate reports, and update inspection records so good IT skills and understanding is needed.

Due to the nature of this role you must hold a full manual UK driving license and be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions. As shift schedules rotate you must be flexible and willing to work evenings and weekends.

**What we can offer you**

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including discounts on city buses and trains. For an illustrative value of your benefits package, take a look at our benefits calculator.

If shortlisted, interviews will take place on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st August 2025.
