Veterinary Pathologist

The main purpose of this role is to provide an effective, reliable and efficient farm animal diagnostic histopathology service to support veterinary disease surveillance in Scotland and veterinary surgeons in practice throughout UK. Key components of thiswork include histological examination of post-mortem tissues in relation to the clinical history and post-mortem findings, providing reports and liaising with colleagues and clients as required. Duties will involve farm animal submissions primarily but workwith companion animal and wildlife submissions is possible.

Duties will include:

- working within a team of veterinary pathologists, to read histopathology sections from all sample types, with support from colleagues for second opinions and case consultations
- liaising with colleagues in post-mortem centres, hubs and species sector groups to become fully familiar with farming systems, diseases and differential diagnoses in order to provide meaningful interpretation of histopathology findings. The role involvesworking with colleagues across the whole SRUC Veterinary Services group with the emphasis on teamwork and co-operation
- helping with investigation of unusual cases of farm animal disease in collaboration with veterinary colleagues within SRUC and other specialist institutions
- being self-motivated to develop in the role, acquiring specialist knowledge of one or more areas applicable to furthering the expertise and standing of SRUC staff in the wider veterinary and scientific community
- participating in research and develop initiatives with colleagues in SRUC and other institutions, contributing to the advisory, development and research effort of other departments within SRUC as required
- to participate in SRUC’s educational programmes relating to animal health
- to contribute as required to SRUC’s education and awareness campaigns to promote animal welfare. To participate in disease eradication and control programme being directed by the State Veterinary Service by providing full supporting laboratory servicesas and when required by the Scottish Government.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

To be considered for this role, you should possess a veterinary degree, be a current member of RCVS and a specialist postgraduate qualification in pathology e.g. FRCPathor similar training is required, although consideration would be given to those currentlyin a veterinary pathology residency and who will be taking examinations for a postgraduate qualification.

You should have experience of farm animal or mixed practice and be familiar with the UK farm animal health, management, disease control measures. You should be strongly motivated towards a career in veterinary pathology and be confident with writing articlesand giving oral presentations.

A driving licence is essential as travel to remote areas not covered by public transport may be required in this role. In this role you may be required to undertake day-visits to other SRUC Veterinary Centres as necessary e.g. for CPD or to deliver training.
