Maternity cover for Head of Outreach at Science Creates Outreach

Would you like to have a job that has a meaningful impact on the lives of young people and the future of the planet? Science Creates’ Outreach is a STEM education charity that invites school and community groups to The Learning Lab at Science Creates Old Market, for hands-on science workshops, opportunities to work and learn alongside scientists and to have tours of the working deep tech incubator it is located in.

The opportunity

We are seeking an enthusiastic and organised individual for a maternity cover position (up to 12 months). In this role, you will deliver educational science workshops, engage with schools, volunteers, and partners, and drive our fundraising and marketing initiatives. You'll be responsible for everything from hands-on workshop facilitation to managing volunteer relationships, ensuring the smooth running of our lab, and overseeing our financial and administrative processes.

Key responsibilities:

- Host and deliver our range of 2 hour science workshops for year 5 and 6 classes (predominantly), alongside expert scientists
- Communicate with other charities, providers, schools and educators including booking and organising visits
- Publicise our charity, alongside our Marketing Coordinator, and advertise our workshops to encourage more schools and community groups to visit

What we need you to bring to the role:
Skills and qualifications:

- Experience in educational workshop delivery, preferably with a background in teaching or community engagement
- Familiarity and experience working with the national curriculum
- Behaviour management skills, able to get and hold the attention of a class of 30 students
- Strong organisational skills and efficient planning abilities, to manage multiple tasks, including workshop coordination, financial management, and marketing
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with schools, volunteers, partners, and funders.
- A proactive, can-do attitude, keen to quickly learn what the charity does and how we run

Personal qualities:

- Approachable and friendly with a passion for education and giving young people new STEM experiences
- A problem solver that demonstrates sound commercial judgement and has the capacity to think strategically
- A self-starter who can operate with mínimal guidance. For the majority of the time this role will work entirely independently (help available = a Marketing Coordinator (½ - 1 day a week), Admin Support (½ - 1 day a week), an Executive Assistant (2 days a week), 4x Trustees available to answer questions when required

What we'll offer in return:
The Science Creates team is open, welcoming and inclusive. The Learning Lab is in a friendly working environment in our new state-of-the-art facility in Central Bristol (just a 10 minute walk from Temple Meads train station and with free parking available). We offer flexibility in working hours and remote working (where possible), to accommodate your work-life balance (a part-time position could also be arranged). Other benefits include 25 days holiday per year plus bank holidays, 3% pension contributions, casual dress and weekly socials at our on-site bar.

About us

Science Creates Outreach is a charity dedicated to shaping the scientists and innovators of tomorrow. We recognize that humanity's greatest challenges—such as climate change, healthcare, and inequality—require not only more scientists and entrepreneurs but also a greater diversity of perspectives within these fields. Our mission is to advance the health of people and our planet by demystifying scientific careers, creating a diverse STEM workforce and equipping the next generation with the skills and confidence to change the world. Our objectives include empowering disadvantaged young people, enhancing STEM education, and sparking a passion for problem-solving.

Science Creates Outreach’s home is our adult-replica laboratory, The Learning Lab, which is a dedicated space for young people to experience STEM first hand. Its location is important as it is situated inside a working deep tech science incubator in the centre of Bristol, where over 30 cutting-edge start-up companies are working in state-of-the-art laboratories. This prime location allows us to take children far beyond what they can experience at school.

Please have a look at our website and our Instagram for more information, photos and examples of the work we do.

What next?
- At Science Creates we believe in the power of diversity and strongly encourage applicants from all parts of society. Our focus is purely on your experience, skills and qualifications.

Location: Science Creates Old Market, with flexibility for partial remote working

Contract type: Temporary

Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week) or part time (minimum 30 hours per week, pro rata)

**Salary**: £40,000

Advert closes: Thursday 26th September 2024
