Job description

We are looking for an individual to support policy and joined up delivery processes for solutions to high-risk planning casework and maximise the opportunities for nature recovery whilst enabling sustainable development.

This will require a focus on engagement, in enabling a solutions-focused approach to existing projects on nutrient neutrality and supporting the coordination and development of approaches to other environmental impacts such as air, water quality and recreational disturbance considering how the team can drive:

- More strategic and effective approaches to avoidance of impacts, mitigation of impacts and delivery of environmental benefits.
- Technical input to the required monitoring feeding into better design and mitigation of future projects.
- Early consideration of compensation options that can be deployed across projects, at speed.

To deliver more upfront and enable a greater focus on delivering large-scale strategic environmental benefits, we are seeking dynamic creative thinkers with a passion for partnership working and engagement.

Playing your part in the teams management of external relationships will be critical. You will feed into cross-government policy making and programme-level stakeholder engagement planning. This will include liaison with developers and a range of government departments to scope and develop solutions and test risk appetite.

Internal networks are as important; you will work closely with NE’s Strategy & Government Advice, National Operations and Area Team colleagues, as well as specialists and legal teams, and collegiately with Sustainable Development Programme Team.

The post is hosted by the Strategic Solutions Team which sits in the Sustainable Development part of the national Strategy and Government Advice Team. The purpose of the Strategy & Government Advice Team is to support the achievement of Natural England’s aims by providing advice, support and delivering work for the programmes, especially including:

- Advising Government on its environmental policy development relevant to our remit;
- Developing and delivering new programmes and pilots for Government to support major strategies such as the 25 Year Plan and Environment Act; and
- Developing internal standards and guidance on novel issues.
