**Summary**:
This excellent opportunity has become available in the Nuclear Weapons programme (NWP) that extends across various UK sites and Life Cycle Phases (LCP), from Aldermaston to HMNB Clyde and at sea during operational deployment. Spanning all the LCP is the current, nuclear weapon Approval & Design Authorities (ADA), this is comprised of the MOD Approval Authority and the AWE Design Authority. The regulatory conditions upon the ADA cover the ‘cradle to grave’ aspects and include: concept and design, modifications, assembly and disassembly, processing, storage and handling of weapons ashore and the operational deployment of weapons onboard submarines. Inspector Replacement Warhead, alongside the ADA regulatory team, will lead the regulation of the intrinsic safety of replacement warhead and the provision of information to the nuclear weapon life-cycle Authorisees.
This challenging new role will give you the ability to develop your skills within Nuclear Safety Regulation and general Nuclear Safety technical fields. You will lead a small team focusing on the Replacement Warhead (RW), thereby working closely with existing ADA colleagues, whilst leading on your own areas of responsibility.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
**Job description**:
- The DNSR Inspector RW team will be the responsible regulator for the RW; carrying out inspection, assessment and permissioning activities to assure compliance with the Authorisation Conditions. The Principal Inspector, Replacement Warhead (DSA-DNSR-IRW) will mirror the responsibilities of the current ADA regulatory function with additional support to the other LCP Principal Inspectors. The DSA-DNSR-IRW post will be augmented by an Inspector (DSA-DNSR-IRW-a).
- DSA-DNSR-IRW will have delegated regulatory authority from the Nuclear Weapon Regulator (NWR) for the following:
- The granting or withholding of permission for activities in the NWP which present a nuclear or radiological risk.
- Approve/agree nuclear safety submissions and safety management arrangements.
- Offer formal regulatory advice and guidance to Authorisee’s representatives.
- Direct the postponement or cessation of specified activity if safety standards have been or are likely to be compromised to an unacceptable degree.
- Assess the demonstration of nuclear emergency arrangements.
- Seek assurance of compliance with the regulatory requirements.
- Co-operate closely with relevant staff from other MOD and statutory regulators.
- This role will provide you with the chance to work on a wide range of nuclear projects over a diverse range of Authorised Sites, directly influencing the DNE within all areas of the CADMID cycle. You will also have significant opportunity to develop your skills within Nuclear Safety Regulation and general nuclear safety technical fields.**Responsibilities**:
- To regulate nuclear and radiological safety as specified in Letters of Delegated Regulatory Authority and in accordance with the DNSR Regulatory Management System.- Assisting the NWR in leading and influencing nuclear safety across the Authorised activities in support of the DNE, through providing regulatory advice and guidance to the Authorisee (NFC 1.1).
- Conduct inspections of the Authorisees arrangements against defence regulations and support the Authorisee in demonstrating sustained compliance of safe nuclear operations (NFC 1.5).
- To assist and provide briefs for other DNSR Principal Inspectors, NWR and DNSR Head as the need arises (NFC 1.5).
**Qualifications**:
- HNC / Degree level qualification or equivalent in a STEM field or equivalent experience.
