**Cycle Instructor Apprenticeship**

Complete an 18-month apprenticeship, working as a Cycle Apprentice within our Cycle department. This role requires an energetic, motivated, and personable individual who is passionate about working with or coaching young people and convey their own passion and knowledge for Cycling and Safe Cycling on the road. Professionalism and reliability are equally important to maintain strong working relationships with clients and the current team.

First Step Cycle, part of the First Step Sports Group is a cycle training organisation specialising in the delivery of on road cycle training for all ages including Bikeability levels 1, 2 and 3, community and adult cycle training.

First Step Cycle are one of the Yorkshire region’s leading cycle training and events specialists, with extensive knowledge and hands on experience, with a dedicated in-house team of talented, qualified trainers and event professionals.

First Step Cycle is passionate about the people we train as well as promoting cycling and increasing the number of people cycling regularly, by building their competence and confidence.

**The Position**

We are seeking a Cycle Apprentice who may have experience working within this industry, you will work as part of a team to deliver fun, safe and informative Bikeability Training for pupils, against the strict guidelines set in the National Standard by the Department for Transport.

**Apprenticeship**:
Level 2 Community Activator Coach

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist with the delivery of National Standard Cycle training as organised by First Step Sports.
- Complete course paperwork including registers, assessments, course reports and results.
- Complete risk assessments of the trainees, cycles, and the training area (including on-road locations).
- Accountable for the safety and welfare of colleagues and trainees.
- Ensure training is delivered in line with First Step Sports’ health and safety policy with an awareness of accident and incident reporting procedures.
- Enable riders to cycle safely, promoting cycling as a means of transport and a fun, healthy activity.
- Research and continuously develop skills.
- Assisting with Cycle Promotion promotion/development
- Dress professionally - In line with the First Step Sports Uniform.
- Adhere to the First Step Sports Delivery Standard.
- Complete the required theory work for the apprenticeship

**Knowledge and Experience Requirements**
- Regular and competent cyclist.
- Understanding and awareness of road and traffic environments.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all riders including children, parents and schools.
- Be decisive, maintain good discipline, inspire confidence and give encouragement.
- Be enthusiastic about cycling with an understanding of cycling as a sport, means of transport, leisure pursuit and healthy form of exercise.
- Be a National Standard qualified cycling instructor - (training will be provided)
- First Aid and Child Protection Training - Desirable (training will be provided)
- Understand basic cycle maintenance - Desirable (training will be provided)
- 1 years’ experience with children; teaching or voluntary - Desirable
- GCSE Maths and English.

**Course Information**:
**The Programme**

Content:
Apprentices will undertake the **Level 2 Community Activator Coach** apprenticeship standard. This was designed by a group of large employment organisations (trailblazers) within the sector, ensuring the apprenticeship standard is fit for the job role as a cycle instructor.

Apprentices will also complete the **1st4sport Level 2 Award in instructing Cycle Training**. This will require the apprentices to take the 4-day training course and complete the online tasks 1-11 within the first two months, then complete their 72-hours of Bikeability delivery and their PCA by month 5 of their apprenticeship.

During the 18 months, the apprentice will also go through a series of additional compulsory training courses/workshops to ensure they are well-rounded, employable people on completion.

This will include:

- Safeguarding Training
- E&D Training
- H&S Training
- First Aid Training

There may also be some ‘added value’ training that we feel will be welcomed by any cycle training provider, including but not limited to:

- Bike Maintenance
- Ride Leaders

The Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship Standard is made up of a series of Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSB’s) that all apprentices must acquire to achieve their apprenticeship successfully.

The Apprentice Cycle Instructor will work alongside their employment mentors to develop the KSB’s. These can be achieved on services such as:

- Delivery of Bikeability L1, L2 & L3
- Pre-Pedal Sessions
- Rusty
