Consultant in Neonatology
Exciting opportunity for a Consultant Neonatologist at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester.
**Hours**: Full time (10 PAs per week)
An exciting opportunity has become available for a substantive Consultant post in Neonatology to join a dynamic team of nursing and medical staff and work on a well-resourced and new NICU. There are plans to expand the current consultant workforce in the next 6-12 months.
The common aim is to develop the department in all aspects of clinical service, teaching and research.
Bolton is one of the largest district general hospitals in Greater Manchester and has a long tradition of delivering neonatal intensive care. As part of the ongoing reconfiguration of neonatal services in Greater Manchester, the neonatal service moved into a purpose-built new unit in October 2010, part of a £20 million investment in new or expanded neonatal, maternity and children’s units at the hospital.
From November 2011 Bolton became one of the three Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Greater Manchester with combined 36 cots (9 Intensive Care, 7 High Dependency, 20 Special Care) and catering to a maternity unit with delivery of around 6000 babies per year, with an established tertiary obstetric service.
In 2019, we admitted 613 babies out of which 82 babies were less than 30 weeks.
The following is a summary of the likely scheduled activities of the postholders:
Neonatal Unit - The post holder will have all his/ her sessions at Royal Bolton Hospital (RBH). There is a hot week system to maintain continuity of care with appropriate changeover rounds. The post holder will be actively involved in the liaison with other relevant specialties e.g. obstetric, radiology, pharmacy, pathology to enable high quality of service delivery
Neonatal follow up clinic - All follow ups to be done in clinics based at Bolton. It is anticipated that most of the babies needing follow up will be from the catchment area of the Bolton NICU. Infants outside the catchment area will be followed up by their local units.
Support services - Full range of support services from pharmacy, ophthalmology (ROP screening and treatment), occupational therapy, pathology, radiology, speech and language therapy etc will be available
Neonatal Outreach Nursing Team - It is perceived the local team will liaise with the wider greater Manchester team. This will enable earlier discharges, good quality of monitoring and follow up after discharge from the NICU.
General Paediatrics - The appointee will not take part in the general paediatric rota and will not have any sessions in general paediatrics.
