**National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS)**

The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) was created as a key component in the UKs strategy to reduce firearms criminality. Located over three sites in Birmingham and Manchester, our mission is to provide a national centre of excellence for forensic science, intelligence and knowledge around the use, supply, distribution and manufacture of illegal firearms and ammunition.

NABIS supports UK Law Enforcement at a local, regional and national level as well as offering support internationally through engagement with key European law enforcement agencies and beyond.

NABIS is currently in year two of a five-year strategy, and over the next three years NABIS has committed to an ambitious programme of transformation to improve our effectiveness and efficiency.

So, if you are a Forensic Ballistic Technician who has completed their Technician training and qualified in Microscopy then this is the post for you.

**Job Specification**

As a Forensic Ballistic Expert you will be required to carry out Ballistic examinations to identify intelligence opportunities, including comparison of ammunition and firearms to identify linked series.

The role is responsible for ensuring that all activities comply with the NABIS Quality requirements in line with ISO17025 and the FSR Codes of Conduct and Practice and supports the strategic vision of NABIS.

You will generally be required to work office hours 36.5 hours per week Monday to Friday, and take part in a weekend on call rota, although there will be occasions when you will be required to work later, or to travel Nationally and Internationally.

**Essential Knowledge and Experience**
- Extensive work experience with a leading forensic organisation or as an independent expert consultant or having successfully completed the NABIS training programme as a NABIS Senior Technician or passed the Senior Technician to Expert qualifying assessment
- Completed a recognised ‘Expert witness course’ in firearms and have court experience.
- Extensive working knowledge and experience of working with firearms and ammunition
- Experienced and trained in the use of IBIS technologies or similar systems
- Experience of safe handling of firearms and disassembly and reloading of ammunition.
- Proven experience of working effectively in a laboratory environment
- The ability to manage an independent case load and ensure that casework is delivered within demanding service level agreement timescales whilst remaining flexible and responsive to changing operational circumstances.
- Experience of assisting and supporting on the job training of staff as required.
- Experience in the use of evidential photography

**Desirable Knowledge and Experience**
- Extensive knowledge of firearms history and manufacturing processes.
- Good knowledge of health and safety legislation.
- Experience of working in a quality management environment, in particular ISO17025
