LWT is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts across the UK. It is the largest conservation body in the region, with ~30,000 members and 200 members of staff working across conservation (looking after 1200ha of nature reserves), education, nature & well being, as well as core support staff.

The Associate will largely be based at LWT premises in Bamber Bridge with occasional time spent at LJMU.

This position is a KTP Associate role to develop and embed scientifically validated research & evidencing of landscape-scale lowland peatland conservation and management to leverage natural capital financing and provision of nature-based solutions to landowners and funders.

The Associate will deliver the KTP project, which will provide the evidencing and insight platform capabilities for delivering novel financing options to support truly innovative approaches to research-driven conservation/sustainable management of lowland peatlands.

The Associate should have or be close to obtaining a relevant PhD. (e.g. Physical Geography, Ecosystem conservation, Geo/Earth Science, Environmental Science), with experience in peatlands sciences and an understanding of peat restoration approaches.

Key stages of work:
Core activities will be split into the following 8 project stages:

- Stage 1: Project exploration, establishment and administration.
- Stage 2: Associate technical and strategic project training and development.
- Stage 3: Addressing knowledge gap 1: KE towards designing and undertaking monitoring, assessing and analysing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data towards carbon finance readiness for restoration sites.
- Stage 4: Addressing knowledge gap 2: KE towards collecting, assessing and analysing biodiversity data to wards Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) finance readiness.
- Stage 5: Addressing knowledge gap 3: Paludiculture and wetter farming.
- Stage 6: Addressing knowledge gap 4: understanding of the legislative and practical landscape surrounding emerging nature-based solution funding opportunities for LWT business case and inform on strategic land acquisition planning.
- Stage 7: Evaluation of Benefits: assessing strategies to reduce emissions and increase biodiversity.
- Stage 8: long-term legacy and post-KTP Project Planning.
