BACKGROUND:
The Northern Ireland Office represents Northern Ireland interests at a UK Government level and UK Government interests in Northern Ireland. We have a wide range of responsibilities, including: overseeing the Northern Ireland devolution settlement; leading on national security policy in Northern Ireland; addressing the legacy of Northern Ireland’s past; delivering elections and constitutional reform in Northern Ireland; and working with the Northern Ireland Executive to rebalance the NI economy.

Security & Protection Group

Keeping people safe is one of the NIO's strategic aims and the Security & Protection Group (SPG) delivers this through three core teams - Policy and Strategy, Casework and Protection, and Operational Response.

We pride ourselves on delivering high-quality work on issues that matter, at pace and often in challenging circumstances. All SPG colleagues work within one of the three core 'parent' teams, allowing everyone to build up specialist knowledge, expertise and relationships. On top of this everyone, regardless of grade or experience, also has the opportunity to suggest projects and get involved in project-based work across outside of their core teams. By approaching work in this twin-track way, we aim to add value, be agile enough to deliver on key Departmental priorities and give everyone in SPG ongoing developmental opportunities across the group that link to, and support, monthly coaching conversations.

SPG has a bias for action and as a group we are committed to using every opportunity to continuously improve ourselves and our business outcomes. We want to nurture talent across our teams, regardless of formal grade. We also want our teams to be proud to be part of SPG and the wider Department. You can expect diverse, rewarding work that goes to the heart of public service and you can expect to do this in a safe space where individuals and teams are supported to deliver and encouraged to innovate, stretch, challenge and learn.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, self-starting team player to work in a fascinating and, at times, fast paced role. They will gain a unique and broad range of skills within a supportive and focused team. There will be unique opportunities to get involved in supporting a range of interesting projects. While the primary focus of the National Security Casework and Protection (NSCP) team is protective security, SPG has wider priorities including counter-terrorism legislation, prisoner casework, terrorism prosecutions and terrorist financing.

The post will involve providing support to work collaboratively with colleagues across the Department and with a wide range of external stakeholders such as PSNI, MI5, DOJ and Whitehall partners, e.g. the Home Office, as well as members of the public. The Department’s relatively small size means that we are able to offer more opportunities to develop relationships with key stakeholders on a wide range of issues. The post holder will also have the opportunity to engage with senior staff within the Department.

The post holder will be able to demonstrate an ability to work in a busy and fast-paced environment, managing information in a secure and organised way using their discretion and good judgement. They will be experienced in delivering administrative and logístical support at pace and will be keen to develop at the centre of a uniquely interesting business area.

The post holders will enjoy being flexible and will relish new challenges, and will be able to work independently as well as within a team. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to contribute to work on one of Government’s highest priorities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Providing administrative and logístical support to the NSCP team in work across the following areas:

- Home Protection
- Northern Ireland Committee on Protection (NICOP)
- Firearm Appeals
- Prohibited Weapons
- Explosive Precursors
- Compensation Claims under the Justice and Security Act

This will include dealing with enquiries and setting up/allocating cases in the team, as well as initiating preliminary enquiries for information which may include reports from security partners;
Act as point of contact for Home Protection maintenance calls during office hours;
Monitor team casework progression/actions, and ensure all information relating to cases is accurately recorded and stored on internal electronic databases;
Liaise with NICOP committee members from Lady Chief Justice’s Office, Nor
