We are seeking a researcher to join a collaborative project between Manchester and Cambridge, funded by the Wellcome Trust.
The project focuses on the role of neuronal activity in facilitating the emergence of network function late in Drosophila embryogenesis, during a critical period. Critical periods provide exciting opportunity to manipulate circuit development and offer novel therapeutic approaches to prevent, or indeed reverse, neurological disease. We recently discovered a critical period in the development of the Drosophila larval locomotor circuit, showing this to be a universal phenomenon. This experimental system allows us to work with identified neuron pairs, to investigate signalling pathways and circuit mechanisms, including changes in synaptic connectivity and transmission. The specific focus of this post is how altered neural activity is sensed and transduced by a developing nervous system, with specific interest in cellular redox states.
You will have expertise in electrophysiology (whole cell and/or loose patch) and in Drosophila genetics. You will gain experience in supervising/mentoring other researchers providing you with skills needed to develop your career further.
