**Job summary**:
Thank you for your interest in the post of Architectural Assistant Trainee with Historic Environment Scotland. This is a 12 month fixed term and pensionable appointment.

This post will be part of a wider programme of Conservation Traineeships. Conservation Trainees have the opportunity to gain practical experience, learn from experts in their
chosen field or craft, increase knowledge of the wider conservation sector, expand their professional network and have access to a wide range of learning resources and
opportunities from the Engine Shed, Scotland’s dedicated Conservation Resource Centre. Working with the Project Architects within the National Investment Projects team, you will be part of the multidisciplinary team of professional and technical staff based in Edinburgh.

The role is primarily focused on the delivery of RIBA Plan of Work on projects related to HES Properties in Care nationwide that have been prioritised for investment and will likely involve contemporary interventions with a sensitive considered approach specifically within a conservation context.

**Job description**:
We are looking for someone with a keen interest in working on
architectural projects within a conservation context to join the National
Investment Projects team at Historic Environment Scotland (HES) as a
trainee.

Your post will be within the National Investment Projects (NIP) team
within the Cultural Assets Directorate of Historic Environment Scotland. Our team sets out visions for investment at our priority sites across all of Scotland and delivers projects to address short term priorities and support the long-term opportunities, working with other teams across the whole organisation and engaging with local communities and external
partners.
- The work of the National Investment Projects team includes:
- Feasibility studies, option appraisals and concept design in

preparation for Sustainable Tourism Projects- Assisting development of Monument Investment Plan reports

delivery of short-term projects identified from the above reports- Scoping of longer-term investment projects identified from the

above reportsDuring your traineeship you will have the opportunity to work across
different teams within HES, attend site visits and assist on outreach
projects.

Your post will be based remotely and at Longmore House in Edinburgh,
but there will be opportunities for site visits and to work with other teams
in HES at other sites in Scotland.

All travel expenses will be covered for additional travel and a laptop will
be provided

**Person specification**:
**Knowledge, skills and experience**

You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the requirements below as part of the selection process.

**_Essential requirements:_**
- Awareness of the built heritage conservation sector
- Experience of using hand tools
- Ability to work independently within a small team and to liaise with other staff as required.
- Willingness to travel and work away from home on conservation projects across Scotland, sometimes working away for weeks at a time.
- Good written and verbal communication skills

**_ Desirable requirements:_**
- Good understanding of Scottish historic building conservation and materials
- Experience in a trade with a transferrable skillset (mechanics, carpentry/joinery, bricklaying, roofing, stonemasonry)
- Experience in restoration and/or working on historic buildings
- Practicable measurement, calculation and drawing skills
- Driving licence and own vehicle
- Basic computer literacy
