Your New role
At National Highways, we’re looking for a Senior Environment Specialist to join our team in Bristol. The role will provide deep specialism and technical expertise in the identification and evaluation of environmental needs and early solutions, while assuringadherence to defined policies and standards.
As part of this role, you may be required to work unsociable hours, and will be required to drive across the South West for the role, with a full clean driving license.
What you’ll be leading on
- Lead and coordinate the activities and resources involved in the identification and evaluation of environmental needs to develop solutions.
- Give technical advice and input into the development of early solutions for improvements and/or renewals, considering new techniques, materials, feasibility, and costs.
- Identify and commission environmental studies and survey works.
- Collaborate with engineering colleagues and Route Managers to ensure forward programme plans reflect asset needs and priorities, environmental legislation, business priorities and strategies.
- Manage internal programme of environmental scoping tasks.
- Contribute to the development of process and procedures directly related to environmental asset.
- Ensure that asset inventory and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant databases.
- Oversee and advise on the development of technical briefs provided to the design and construction contractor for improvement and renewals work.
- Support technical reviews of third-party designs to ensure that they comply with standards and design briefs.
- Monitor the delivery of agreed solutions and plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
- Oversee the production of environmental improvements and renewals and associated documentation and provide input for monthly financial forecasts and annual/quarterly bids.
- Manage and produce calculations for KPI reporting for no net loss of biodiversity.
- Recommend opportunities to improve environmental asset management capability, processes and approaches, and manage the implementation of changes within own area of responsibility.
To be Successful
- Degree or equivalent qualification in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
- Arboriculturalist qualification / experience
- Membership of professional body
- Experience in highway construction and delivery methods
- Excellent understanding of relevant environmental asset policies and strategies
- Environmental asset management decision making (e.g., investment, lifecycle costs, value optimism, service optimisation)
- Understanding of the Value Management process or cost benefit analysis of schemes
- Strong knowledge of asset condition assessment and degradation modelling
- Experience in working within budgets including the creation of a budget for scheme development
- Familiarity with GIS packages
- Knowledge of tree risk management (desirable)
