Casual Cafe

YMCA Newark & Sherwood are looking for Casual Café & Events Assistant to work at our Community & Activity Village.

Our Community Café and Conferencing space serves locally sourced food, freshly prepared using seasonal ingredients on-site with a range of hot, cold and alcoholic beverages.

We are looking for you to join our vibrant, fun and passionate team who strive to create a café with great atmosphere, serving fantastic food and drinks. Working various hours per week on a casual basis including some evenings and weekends, you will work across our Community Café and upstairs on the first floor, in our 200+ seating conference centre for large and private events.

This is a very varied venue with a diverse customer base bring interest and variety to your every day.

On a day to day basis, you can expect your role to include:

- Working as part of a team to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the village café.
- Welcoming visitors in a warm, friendly manner.
- Serving drinks and food products efficiently and politely, including for bespoke events and conference facilities.
- Supporting the Hospitality Team in setting up, setting down and delivering events
- Promoting a welcoming, inclusive and community-focused environment
- Check and maintain stock levels throughout shifts
- Keep the food and drink storage clean and tidy on shifts
- Clean and tidy the café, bar and conference areas on shifts.

About You

With proven experience of working in a bar or hospitality environment, you will be customer-centric, always putting the customer first. You will be a friendly person, able to welcome customers and instantly build rapport to make them feel comfortable and at ease. You will have the highest expectations of good customer service and strive every day to do your very best.

You will need to be confident to speak with customers and also to communicate clearly and effectively with your team to ensure the smooth running of our venue.

As you will be handling cash and other payment, you must be honest and trustworthy.

You will enjoy being busy and working in a fast paced environment. You will thrive under pressure and able to keep calm and controlled at busy times.

From your experience, you will have a strong awareness of current food and beverage industry product trends as well as a good working knowledge of Health and Safety and Food and Drink preparation practices. We are able to support your own personal development with further training and qualifications should they be required.

As would be expected of a hospitality venue, there is an expectation of some evening and weekend work as well as pitching in at short notice to cover shifts in emergency situations and being flexible to accommodate slight changes to rotas etc.

You will be fully supported by your manager and supervisor but we are also looking for you to play an integral role in building a positive team dynamic. As much as we want the customer to have a great experience, we want that for our employees too.
