**Job Description**:
**Education Welfare Officer**

The Education Welfare Service is committed to supporting children and families where problems prevent children from achieving educational success. The focus of the service is to improve pupils’ access to education, either at school or otherwise.
As an Education Welfare Officer you will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team and will need to work closely with colleagues and other professionals in order to ensure that children receive the best possible support. You may, on occasions, be expected to undertake legal proceedings against parents who fail to ensure the regular attendance of their child/children.
You will hold a Diploma in Welfare Studies or have an equivalent relevant qualification supported by personal or professional experience of working with children and young people. Additionally you will have good interpersonal skills including a good standard of written communication and competent IT skills.

Access to a full driving licence and own transport is
**essential**.

**PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES**:

- Working closely with school staff to identify children with attendance problems
- Investigating and assessing problems of children and families and planning appropriate action to enable children to attend school regularly
- Providing guidance and support to families
- Encouraging and facilitating contact between home and school
- Issuing warnings and institute legal proceedings when necessary
- Representing the LEA in the Magistrates’ court, i.e. presenting prosecution cases on behalf of the LEA and taking appropriate follow-up action
- Liaising with, and referring to, other agencies when appropriate
- Attending child protection case conferences and core groups when appropriate
- Attending planning meetings when appropriate
- Maintaining up-to-date case records and carry out other administrative duties
- Facilitating the re-admission to school of pupils who have been absent for long periods due to time spent in hospital, protracted illness, and children who have returned home after being “Looked After”
- Referring to the Community Health Officer for medical examination when it is suspected that frequent illness is used as an excuse for not attending school
- Keeping up-to-date with all relevant legislation, documentation and reports and disseminate this information to schools when necessary
- Participating in truancy initiatives with colleagues and local community police officers
- Attending supervision sessions with the Principal Education Welfare Officer
- Participating in any training and development activities in order to maintain own professional development or to enhance competence within job role.
- Undertaking any duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grade of the post and participate in the regular review of the content of the job description.

**Qualifications & Training**
- Diploma in Welfare Studies or a relevant qualification at this level.
- Commitment to on-going professional development
- Degree in Social work or similar
