**Job description**:
As a Policy Advisor, you will join a friendly, driven, and passionate team who are committed to making a genuine difference by delivering the Integrated Rail Plan for the North and Midlands (IRP) and shaping the rail network’s long-term future.

You will be based within the Rail Infrastructure North, Midlands and Integrated Rail Plan Directorate, which sits at the heart of the Department for Transport’s Rail Infrastructure Group. In November 2021, the Department published the IRP, outlining the biggest ever single government investment in the railway, a £96bn strategy of rail construction and upgrades, for the Midlands and the North, to be delivered over the next 30 years.

One Policy Advisor role will support our Future Network Planning programme, and the other will support our Northern Powerhouse Rail programme. In both Policy Advisor roles, you will be working in a fast-paced project environment, supporting on developing critical plans following the IRP, and will have plenty of opportunities for personal and professional development. **You can find more information about the two programmes within the attached Role Profile.**

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Supporting the development of a programme of inter-related projects across different teams, to successfully support delivery of study outputs suitable for Ministerial decision.
- Coordinating levelling-up and political-level engagement, providing briefings to senior officials and Ministers.
- Supporting to identify preferred options for government and, as necessary, work through outcomes relating to safeguarding and high-speed line design.
- Developing policy options, draft policy papers, and business cases.
- Assisting the preparation of any announcement, consultation documents or supporting explanatory and analysis documents, as required.

**Person specification**:
**About you**

You will be an articulate communicator who enjoys building effective working relationships with key stakeholders and senior colleagues. You will be able to adapt your delivery to suit your audience and will be confident delivering key information, both verbally and in writing.

You will be comfortable working at a fast pace and will effectively manage numerous pieces of work simultaneously. You will display resilience when faced with conflicting priorities, and will be able to use your initiative to make decisions when required. You will develop an understanding of how your work will align with the broader strategic goal, and how it will contribute to achieve this.

**Additional Information**

This role is available to individuals who wish to be spending their office time in London, Leeds or Birmingham, and we would also expect the individual to be willing to occasionally travel to visit alternative DfT offices or meet with stakeholders.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
