Communication Support Worker

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter to join our organisation as an in-house resource. As an in-house BSL Interpreter, you will play a crucial role in facilitating effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and our staff members, ensuring equal access to information and services. You will provide interpretation services in a variety of settings, including meetings, training, presentations, and one-on-one interactions.
**Responsibilities**:
- BSL Interpretation: Accurately interpret spoken language into British Sign Language (BSL) and vice versa, ensuring clear communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and staff members.
- Meetings and Presentations: Provide interpretation services during meetings, presentations, conferences, and other relevant events to enable effective participation and understanding for all attendees.
- Translation: Assist in the translation of written materials, such as documents, reports, and correspondence, from written English to BSL and vice versa to ensure accessibility.
- Communication Support: Offer support to deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and staff members to enhance their understanding and communication abilities in various situations.
- Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding any sensitive or private information shared during interpreted sessions or encounters.
- Professional Development: Stay updated with advancements in BSL interpretation techniques, tools, and best practices, attending relevant training sessions and workshops to enhance professional skills.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of interpreted sessions, including dates, times, and topics discussed, as well as any challenges or notable incidents for future reference.
Qualifications:
- BSL Proficiency: Fluent in British Sign Language (BSL) with a strong understanding of its grammar, vocabulary, and cultural nuances.
- Interpretation Skills: Proven ability to interpret spoken language accurately and effectively into BSL and vice versa, adapting to different contexts and communication styles.
- Certification: Possession of a recognized BSL Interpreter qualification, such as the Signature Level 6 Certificate in BSL Interpreting, or an equivalent certification.
- Experience: Prior experience working as a BSL Interpreter in various settings, such as educational institutions, government organisations, or corporate environments, is highly desirable.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills, with the ability to convey messages clearly, accurately, and professionally in both BSL and spoken English.
Pay: From £40,000.00 per year
