Established in April 2016, the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) was set up to oversee all aspects of nuclear business within the MOD; responsible for all submarines (from buying them through to disposal when they reach the end of their life), nuclear warheads, skills, related infrastructure and day-to-day nuclear policy. DNO consists of the people, equipment and infrastructure required to successfully deter the most extreme threats to our national security and way of life.

Within DNO, the Warhead Directorate leads the UK nuclear warhead programme which provides a stockpile of reliable, safe and effective nuclear warheads to support the UK’s strategic nuclear deterrent now and in the future.

The Warhead Directorate has staff based in MOD Main Building, MOD Abbey Wood (Bristol), Aldermaston (Reading) and HM Naval Base Clyde (Scotland). This post will be based in Burghfield (Reading) with a requirement to travel to Aldermaston (Reading) occasionally.

This post is on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.

**Job description**:
The Product Acceptance Officer’s primary role is working closely with AWE to ensure that they produce a quality product, safely and securely to support the nation’s deterrent. The Product Acceptance Officer will work as part of a small team of DNO staff based within AWE under the direction of the DNO Engineering Management Assistant Head. This team is charged with overseeing the design, manufacture and delivery of deterrent capabilities into service. It monitors all production operations at AWE Burghfield, supports UK-US interactions and pro-actively identifies and raises any issues that could impact UK Nuclear Weapon production._ _

**Person specification**:
**Responsibilities**:

- Formal observations of all aspects of production, including the documentation and reporting of the observation outputs in the form of audit reports and verbal briefings, to ensure AWE is assembling and disassembling warheads against safety, performance and quality criteria.
- Documenting non-conformances and pro-actively seeking their satisfactory resolution to ensure a quality output of warheads from AWE.
- Work with the US, in the UK and abroad, on emergent issues and progressing technical exchanges developing new ways of working.
- Understand and track trends in defects during warhead assembly.
- Represent DNO at both routine and non-routine production meetings to ensure DNO’s requirements are met on any resolution AWE propose to issues.
- Understand the current status of warhead production and how this compares with MoD’s programmatic requirements.

**Qualifications**:
HNC/HND or equivalent (or a higher qualification) in a science or engineering discipline.

**Desirable Skills**:

- Experience of collaborating across functional and organisational boundaries by building productive relationships
- Experience in a production environment
- Experience relating to nuclear technology
- Knowledge of Nuclear Warhead systems and their acquisition

Membership of a Professional science Engineering Institution, or equivalent, or route to Incorporated/Chartered Status
