Biodiversity Net Gain Advisor

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Biodiversity and Geomorphology Team as a Biodiversity Net Gain Advisor for West Midlands area. Working as part of a dedicated team the role will focus primarily on enabling Biodiversity Net Gain through land use planning and our capital schemes. You will support sustainable development, build ecological resilience to climate change, assess the ecological impacts of our capital projects and ensure that biodiversity net gain is achieved.

The team
- The team has a vast amount of biodiversity expertise. We cover a rich, diverse environment with a mix of urban and rural catchments. We deliver technical advice and guidance to all aspects of the Environment Agency’s (EA) work including our own capital flood defence/flood risk management schemes, our river maintenance programme, responding to pollution incidents and influencing EA strategies and plans. We conserve and enhance rivers, still-waters, wetland, and estuaries to achieve long-lasting environmental improvements.
Experience/skills required
- You will be an ecologist, or naturalist, qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline where biodiversity/ ecology and environmental management was a major component of study as well as:
- Demonstrable relevant technical expertise and experience of working in the fields of biodiversity, nature conservation and/or ecology (Essential)
- Good knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain including experience of using or advising on the use of the Defra Metric (Essential)
- An excellent working knowledge of national and/or local biodiversity matters and applied ecological knowledge and understanding (Essential)
- Experience of developing policy and/or practice in biodiversity related themes, working with a range of internal and/or external stakeholders (Desirable)
- Membership of an appropriate professional organisation (Desirable).
Due to the nature of the sites we visit, a full UK driving licence and the ability to swim are essential.
