Chester, United Kingdom Weaverham High School Full time

Start date: ASAP Salary: Grade 7 starting scale £25419 raising to £28226, actual salary for hours £13,278 (22.5hours per week/39 weeks per year)

Weaverham High School Library is housed in a purpose built building which was opened in October 2000 by the author David Almond. The library building comprises the main library, a librarian’s resource room, 22 computers and two offices which are used by Careers and Pastoral Support staff.

The library stock comprises just over 9000 fiction titles, 4500 non-fiction titles, a number of periodicals and a section dedicated to careers and further education. In addition, the library loans 700 items annually from Cheshire Library Service. The library issues over 8000 fiction and 1100 non-fiction books annually.

Pupils have access to the library before school, at morning break, at lunchtime and after school until 4.30pm. During lesson times pupils can use the library on an individual basis when they are under the supervision of the librarian or as a whole class when they are supervised by the class teacher.

The use of Accelerated Reader is an integral part of the reading experience at Weaverham and is used from years 7 to 9 with students regularly taking quizzes on the books they have read and completing reading age tests. The librarian manages the system along with the second in English and provides reports for all English teachers. Classes in Years 7-9 have designated English lessons once a fortnight in the library to facilitate Accelerated Reader.

Peer-to-peer reading groups, teacher-led reading groups and book clubs are a regular feature of the library. This provides an opportunity not only for social interaction, but to build on and strengthen literary criticism.

A group of keen pupil library assistants has been trained by the librarian to work in the library at lunchtimes and they help with the issue of books and returning of stock to the shelves. The library stock and loans are managed through the Eclipse Management System.

In addition to the funding of the loans from the Cheshire Library Service, there is a capitation allowance to the library. It is expected that this will cover the running costs of the library including the purchase of periodicals and the replenishing of stock. The purchase of more substantial items can be bid for as part of the budget submission process. You will have sole responsibility for managing expenditure of library capitation. During each academic year we seek to arrange for a well known author to visit the library and carry out workshops with pupils. In the past year we have had talks and workshops from local author Sally Green and historical fiction writer Paul Dowswell.

This post offers you the opportunity to work in a very pleasant environment and you will find pupils who are keen to learn and to assist you in your job. You will find colleagues who are keen to make use of your knowledge and ability.
