**Overview of the role**:
Working within a HR team led by the Divisional Director for HMPPS HR, you will ensure that our people are at the heart of everything we do.

As a Head of HR for the London region, you will be responsible for forging productive relationships with the Regional Probation Director (RPD) and senior leadership teams both with the region and wider Probation Service, enabling translation of business priorities and strategy into a coherent people agenda with targeted interventions.

Working alongside the RPD and their Senior Leadership Team to design and deliver tailored HR interventions to drive improvements in effective leadership, people management, organisational design and development, change management and workforce strategy.

Postholders will work closely with colleagues across People Group to provide business insight to improve HR processes, systems and the service provided to business areas. They will address medium and longer-term challenges by working closely with MOJ’s People Group’s Expert Centres and HR colleagues across MoJ and its agencies, as well as the wider Civil Service professions.

**Summary**:
Key to this role is the need to be a credible HR professional with the ability to establish quality relationships. Working across the regional / expert services HR team, the Head of HR is the primary contact for senior stakeholders and their success is reliant upon the strength and support of the rest of the HMPPS HR and People Group function via Shared Services and Expert Services, as such the individual will need to be able to deliver through others.

In summary the postholder will lead the London Probation HR team to;
- Work closely with the RPD and Senior Leadership Teams on strategic workforce planning to establish existing and future workforce numbers, skills requirements and organisation structures
- Provide support and advice on resourcing vacancies, ensuring compliance with Civil Service Commissioner Principles
- Advise on and delivering talent management - supporting building capability through implementing talent reviews, supporting performance validation and advising on capability plans for the business,
- Support the RPD and Senior Leadership Teams to identify and plan employee engagement interventions, using Civil Service People Survey data, that will drive increased capability and performance
- Engage Directors and Senior Leadership Teams to ensure people issues and risks are considered at the appropriate time
- Support the implementation of changes by proactively planning and advising on effective change management

The London HR team for Probation has a number of new team members so you will need to be able to demonstrate proven leadership skills to set the direction and bring the team together to support the London Probation region. **Essential Knowledge, Experience and Skills**:

- Previous experience of working in a HR team within the Civil Service, and an awareness of the wider CSHR operating model
- The ability to confidently build and manage a diverse range of relationships, including with senior stakeholders
- Strong experience of leadership in a HR team, with experience of leading on HR strategy or previous experience as a HR Business Partner
- Excellent communication skills, both in verbal and written formats

**Desirable Knowledge, Experience and Skills**:

- Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)
- Project Management Experience
