I am currently recruiting for a Democratic Services Officer to join a Local London Authority in East London on a contract basis.

The client is looking for someone to:

- ensure that council decisions are taken in the correct way and that decisions are timely, joined up and well presented
- ensure that the council fulfils all its obligations as regards scrutiny and that targeted scrutiny contributes to developing better public services
- support the audit, scrutiny and other governance functions within the council to ensure that processes and decisions are robust
- join up various strategic initiatives to ensure that there is a common narrative across the council and that contradictions are identified and ironed out at an early stage.

Main duties of the role will include:

- Proactively supporting and leading on all aspects of work relating to the Council’s decision-making structure, including providing advice and support to Members, officers, stakeholders and citizens.
- Responsibility to ensure that all decisions are taken in accordance with all legal and constitutional requirements.
- Proactively managing and supporting all aspects of the Member / Officer decision making having regard to local procedures, council policy and best practice.
- Advising Members and officers on legal and constitutional requirements of the decision making process and relevant legislation.
- Contributing to providing efficient and effective support to all Members on Committees
- Leading on supporting all aspects of Cabinet, Council and Committee meetings including preparing reports and agendas, attending meetings to take minutes of the formal proceedings and advising on constitutional requirements.
- Leading on advising Members and officers concerning relevant legislation and procedures relating to the remit of individual committees.
- Thorough understanding of legislation in respect of local authority decision making
- Knowledge of the Member Code of Conduct.
- Knowledge of and ability to use computer packages (including Modern.gov and Microsoft Office).
- A qualification in the field of local government structures or decision making is desirable.
- Experience of working at a similar level within a local authority or large public organisation.
- Experience of managing Committee work programmes.

**Salary**: £25.09 per hour
