About the Department

Warwick Medical School

Warwick Medical School has an excellent reputation for our distinctive portfolio of high-quality education programmes and for the excellence and global impact of our research.

The breadth of our interest and expertise is demonstrated through our dynamic and influential directorates: Warwick Applied Health (WAH), Warwick Clinical Trials Unit (WCTU), and Warwick Biomedical Sciences (BMS). Our Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) works across the directorates, University and with external stakeholders to accelerate the delivery of practical human health benefits arising from research.

The Medical School and University exist within a local, regional, national and international health and care diaspora with excellent inter-institutional links, partnerships and relationships. The connections stretch across academia, industry and the NHS, with a particular strength in our local health eco-system with our local NHS trusts. The strong and effective relationships that we have established over the past 25 years support our excellent teaching, research, innovation and broader educational and academic activities and enable new and existing activities to be undertaken to the highest of standards.

Primary Care

Primary care research spans across Warwick Medical School (WMS) and university, accelerating progress by encouraging disciplines to work together effectively, embedding primary care into broader human health research. This cross-disciplinary approach has and continues to build a strong pipeline of ideas and collaborative projects that are competitive for external funding. There is a strong focus on Team Science approach to address national and global challenges.

Our vibrant research programmes are supported by strong platforms across the University and wider NHS/NIHR enabling interdisciplinary research such as NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West Midlands; NIHR Coventry Health Determinants Research Collaboration; and Warwick Global Health. Our focus is on Population and Health Data Science, Health Technology Innovation, Multiple Long Term Conditions, Inequalities in Health Care, and Global Health. Senior clinical academics include Professor Paramjit Gill, Professor Frances Griffiths, and Dr Rachel Spencer.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

This is an opportunity to be part of the Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage research and The Centre for Early Life in which we excel in translational research into implantation and miscarriage (Brosens/Quenby), preterm labour (Blanks/Quenby), endometriosis (Greaves) and embryology (Hartshorne/MacAinsh). We have large collections of clinical samples and associated metadata in the Tommy’s Reproductive Health Biobank and the Tommy’s Net cohort multiple randomised controlled trial platform both of which are available to facilitate the appointee’s research.
