**Job summary**:
**Background: The UK Space Agency**:
The UK Space Agency (UKSA) is an executive agency of the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) and provides technical advice on the government’s space strategy, supporting the UK space sector to deliver the government’s vision.
Space is a part of everyday life. Satellites underpin our national economy, from agriculture and banking to aviation and shipping, and support our national security. Space science provides critical data to understand and address global challenges such as climate change, while missions to explore our solar system unite nations and advance humanity’s horizons.
We support a thriving space sector in the UK, which generates an annual income of £16.5 billion and employs 47,000 people across the country.
Through our portfolio of programmes and projects, we encourage the development of national space capabilities and are an early-stage investor in space research and development. We also promote the UK space sector’s interests and achievements; make connections to join up industry and academia; and represent the UK in international space programmes
We have a powerful global voice, partnering with institutions across the world, including the European Space Agency.
**Our Inclusive Environment**
We have an inclusive culture to make UKSA a brilliant place to work where our people feel valued, have a voice and can be their authentic selves. We value difference and diversity, not only because we believe it is the right thing to do, but because it will help us be more innovative and make better decisions.
We offer first-class flexible working benefits, excellent employee well-being support and a great pension. We are fortunate to have a range of excellent staff networks and are proud to be a Disability Confident Leader employer. We will support talented people from all backgrounds to build a career and thrive.
**Job description**:
The Spaceflight Programme is a high priority within the UKSA and across government. Working closely with colleagues from the Department for Transport (DfT), Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and others, it aims to create conditions enabling the UK to be the first country in Europe to achieve commercial small satellite launch - generating growth for the UK’s economy and establishing the conditions for ongoing market growth and commercial sustainability by 2030.
The programme aims to unlock significant new benefits from these services, including a share of the estimated £15bn small satellite launch opportunity by the end of the next decade, new local economic activity around spaceport site(s), and new highly skilled jobs in space science and technology.
Spaceflight Programme delivers enabling activities to create the UK launch market; grants to ensure critical infrastructure (commercial spaceports and launch service providers); international government-to-government agreements; UK launch legislation and regulations, including a UK launch regulator. The output of Phase 1 is to deliver three pathfinder UK launches (from Cornwall, Shetland Islands and Sutherland).
Purpose, Aims and Objectives
The Programme Planner role covers a diverse range of activities to support the delivery of the programme’s objectives. The purpose of the role is to ensure the Spaceflight programme has a robust delivery plan which enables the Programme Management Office (PMO) to monitor progress and ensure deliverables remain on schedule. The plan should support senior level decision making in pursuit of the programme’s aims. The post will report directly to the Head of Spaceflight PMO.
The role requires detailed engagement and close working across the programme consulting with stakeholders at all levels across the programme sustaining the regular cycle of collecting management information, to inform programme plans.
The team is split across two main locations (London and Swindon) and includes resources from the Department for Transport, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Health and Safety Executive; as well as having interfaces with many other departments. The post holder will have an important role to play in ensuring that coherence is sustained across the team.
This post will be based in one of the UK Space Agency locations in London, Swindon or Chilton; with travel to the other UK Space Agency locations and potentially travel to other parts of the UK as required.
