As Assistant Professor in Drama, Theatre and Performance, you will teach students across theory and practice and contribute to the broader culture of Drama within the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities.
- Drama, Theatre and Performance at Sussex is a department of dynamic researchers, educators and students, specialising in interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary theatre and performance.
- We collaborate closely with the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts on campus, where students are taught, make their own work and encounter a world-class public programme of theatre, dance, music, literature and film.
- We engage with local and regional partners, working across disciplines and sectors, and the department prides itself on its strong sense of community and progressive ethos.
- Part of the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities, Drama faculty work alongside colleagues and students in music, literature, media practice, creative writing, film and art history among other fields.
- Our specialisms include contemporary theatre-making, directing and writing, performance and ecology, popular theatre, dance and the choreographic, anti-racist performance praxis and scholarship, feminist pedagogies, actor training, site-specific theatre and queer theatre and theory.
- As scholars and practitioners, we are committed to socially progressive enquiry and change across all areas of our work.
About you
You will play an integral role in teaching and academic student support across a range of theory and practice modules on our undergraduate programme in Drama, Theatre and Performance.
- You may be an Early Career Academic or a scholar-practitioner, and will be invested in the transformational potential of arts education.
- You will teach and assess students drawing on your research and creative specialisms, including areas such as theatre-making, theatre and performance analysis, directing and performance composition, experimental and collaborative devising, and staging theatre texts.
- You will supervise dissertations and practice-based undergraduate research projects and support students’ creative production processes.
- Through your teaching practice and contribution to broader departmental activities, you will contribute to Drama’s curriculum development and student recruitment, as well as offering new teaching and research areas to complement and expand our existing work.
- First and foremost, we are looking for someone who is committed to collaboration, thinks in innovative and ethical ways about teaching, learning and research, and who understands the challenges today’s students face.
