Wates Developments holds a large and growing portfolio of potential residential development land and our team focuses on securing valuable planning consents in sustainable locations, in both town and country settings throughout Southern England.

We currently have an opportunity for a Head of Sustainability and Engagement. This role will drive the design and implementation of the Wates Developments Group (WDG) sustainability strategy with a focus on environmental, social value and diversity. Additionally you will lead efforts from the WDG Board to foster high levels of inclusion across the business unit and to recruit, retain and develop a high-performing diverse team.

A critical deliverable for this role will be to create a reputation externally as a sustainable land promoter within all areas of influence - land / bidding, projects/planning, business operations, community and stakeholder engagement, House Building Joint Venture partners, Wates Partnerships and Development Agency Services customers

**Some of the Key Accountabilities will include**:
Interface regularly with board colleagues, other business unit leadership teams, Wates Group's Environmental Sustainability Director, colleagues and key external stakeholders/decision makers to ensure that WDG reputation in each key element of this strategic agenda is enhanced.

Lead on sustainability implementation plan that is aligned to Wates Group’s wider sustainability strategy.

Working with the land and project teams, ensure that WDG is a leading voice and influence in the debate on the evolution of external regulation, technological and market changes. Influence the development of the WDG board strategy on responding in a professional and timely manner to legal, policy and market changes.

Engage regularly with senior internal and external stakeholders and decision makers to drive sustainability outcomes. This will involve collaborating with our House Building JV partners and Wates Partnership / Development Agency Services customers through early engagement and decision-making, as well working with local authorities, landowners and the wider public

Support where required on external communications to key stakeholders planning projects in relation to the Groups sustainability credentials and aspirations for individual projects

We are looking for

Experience in sustainable development solutions - land and building

Knowledge of policy and regulations

High levels of communication and influencing experience with a range of audiences

To be successful in this role you will have a strong understanding of current and future sustainability policy and regulations within the development sector (both nationally and locally) teamed with a knowledge of development land market (owners) and planning processes together with being a strong communicator.
