Job Introduction
Newsbeat is the flagship news programme on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra and provides news to meet the needs of the network’s target audience of 15-24 year olds. It’s a highly creative multi-media team, maintaining and developing an agenda that’s relevant to the audience across all platforms.

Both Newsbeat and Asian Network News have a strong track record for delivering diverse and original journalism which makes an impact internally and externally across platforms creating content for radio, TV, digital including social platforms and iPlayer and Sounds.
In October this year the teams will move to Birmingham which is part of broader BBC changes planned to focus on younger audiences. The post holder will support the teams through the Modernising BBC News changes and relocation to Birmingham
Main Responsibilities
As the Executive News Editor, you will lead the management and development of the team, supporting everyone to be at their best to deliver creative treatments of news stories that engage, and reflect young and diverse audiences.
- You will help shape the direction of our output, and lead on the overall strategy and development of programming and schedules playing a leading role in planning and commissioning - ensuring a high level of high impact, fast, accurate, engaging, diverse, relevant and fair journalism.
- You will also be expected to plan ahead and be aware of future developments and trends, briefing and advising colleagues on relevant topics and events as well as generating ideas for original journalism with the ability to translate complex ideas and material and tailor it for the audience in fresh, innovative and exciting ways.
- You will provide strong editorial leadership, managing and deploying a team ensuring collaboration to maximum effect.
We are looking for an experienced Executive Editor with a clear understanding of our audiences on Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network for the position of Executive Editor, Newsbeat and Asian Network News. We want someone with a strong vision on how to reach our audiences with distinctive and engaging journalism when and wherever they want it.
You should have a strong sense of how stories can make an impact on all platforms and an instinct for how to attract new audiences with the ability to support the team to generate fresh ideas and have the production flair to help turn those ideas into engaging content.
You should have a track record of overseeing content for radio, TV, and digital platforms (inc. BBC News website, social media, iPlayer and Sounds); commissioning and delivering high-impact original journalism for young audiences.
You will be responsible for indirectly managing a large team; we are looking for someone who knows how to motivate and inspire others to deliver their best work and also have the resilience to successfully manage the team through change.
The role requires someone who has previous experience leading as senior manager with the ability and confidence to take tough editorial decisions and cope with conflicting demands in pressurised situations, often working independently.
